The name game

Prompt: Autumn and Winter come up with pet names for each other

"Honey!" he called up the stairs of their now shared house. Winter had recently moved in with Autumn and both parties were very happy about it. Even though they had only been dating a few months they thought it might be easier as all of Winters things were already at her house and he spent most of his time there anyway. "Honey!" He tried again, no reply.

He walked up the stairs to find Autumn getting changed after a shower, looking as beautiful as ever with her still wet hair. "Aut I was calling you, I choose a movie for us to watch, you didn't hear me?" She looked at him, slightly confused "is that why you were yelling honey all over the house?" She giggled slightly "Winter you've never called me that before in your life" he sighed dramatically. "We have no pet names for each other I thought I would try it out" she stood up and gave him a kiss "I appreciate you trying but I don't think honey is the one for us."

The next day Winter wanted to try again with the names, he had been thinking of what he could call her but was honestly feeling a bit stumped. Autumn was currently doing some grocery shopping and he was at home alone, his phone rang and he smiled seeing her number come up "hi babe, you okay" she didn't speak for a minute "Autumn?" He questioned "what are we 12?" She replied back, he laughed knowing what she meant "I don't like it, babe isn't for us, we're too old" she said firmly "I'll try not take offence to that, but I get it, babe is not the one, I'm guessing that means baby is out too then?" "You guessed correctly, now do you want chicken or steak for dinner tomorrow?" The conversation continued as normal and the names were dropped.

He continued to think but never tried any new ones on her for a few weeks. He knew she would be picky about this. He always thought pet names were cute and he did use them a lot in his last relationship. His last relationship was very different from his current one with Autumn. His ex was a bit over the top and was very jealous, she wanted him all to herself and didn't really take no as an answer. In the end Winter found himself walking on eggshells around her and knew that it wasn't a good way to live, eventually breaking up with her. She enjoyed being called every name possible just like most girls would but Autumn wasn't like most girls and he wanted a name that she loved and felt comfortable with.

He had some paperwork he needed to give Marjorie so made his way up to the office. He enjoyed going to the office, it gave him an excuse to see his lovely girlfriend even if it was only for a minute or two it was still enough time to say hello to her. "Marjorie I have the intake forms for the new child starting next week" he said handing the papers over to her "thank you Winter, his parents seem lovely so I'm hoping they aren't too much of a hassle for you, you deserve that after being giving two mummy bloggers" he agreed and went to walk out of the office again "see you later Marjorie, bye gorgeous" he said looking over at Autumn. Marjorie was a bit taken back at his sudden nickname for Autumn. "Ah ah ah, get back in here" Autumn called out to him.

He sheepishly turned back around and came back into the office again. "You can't use that name" Autumn stated not even looking up from her computer. "That's what my brother calls Marjorie, I don't want to be matching with them. It's not for us to use that one isn't for us" Winter smirked slightly, he did love when Autumn was in full deputy manager mode. He sometimes forgets she has full authority over him when he's in work. "My apologise, I'll see you later Aut" he corrected himself and went back to preschool.

That same day he decided to annoy Autumn more by trying another name on her. Her shift ended later than his so he was already home by the time she was finished. He heard her come through the door and take her shoes and coat off at the door. She came into the room "hello Winter" she said softly going over to give him a sweet kiss. "Hello angel how was your day" her face dropped and she pouted slightly. "That one is cute but it still doesn't feel right, I feel like we're trying to hard it needs to come naturally. Don't think about it and it'll happen." He rolled his eyes at her and smiled at how serious she was taking this.

The conversation about the pet names was abandoned for a while and honestly both of them forgot about it, Autumn was right if they didn't think about it maybe it would come naturally. The following week Winter made his way back up to the office again "Hello Autumn is Marjorie here?" He asked, she looked up at him "no she's in a meeting at head office is there anything I can help with?" Again he loved seeing her in work, she was completely different than she was at home and he knew how lucky he was to get to see her in a less serious way. "I was just looking for those intake forms I brought us a few weeks ago, his parents gave me another piece of information so I thought I would write it down now that I remember."

Autumn went looking around in some folders until she found the few pages she was looking for. And handed them over to him. "Thank you, I'll see you later my sweet" he said without even thinking about it. He heard her gasp and turned around again thinking something was wrong.

"What's wrong" he asked nervously, he was just looking at her surely something couldn't have happened.

"What did you just call me?" She asked with a small smile on her face. She watched him think for a few seconds because saying "my sweet?" She showed him a big cheesy grin. "I think we've found the one" she said happily. He finally got what she meant and walked over and gave her a hug "we've found a name!" He said swaying them slightly in excitement "and it suits you perfectly my love" he tried a different one loving the way a pink blush came over Autumns cheeks, he knew that one was a win too.

She gave him a quick kiss being conscious that they were in the office. "I love them my sweet" she tried it out on him and got the same happy reaction from him as well. It felt like it fit the both of them and they were both delighted that they had found names that they liked.

Once they were home that night they were using their newly found names in every sentence. Loving the reaction it pulled from the other person. They were both currently swaying in the living room to one of their records. They both loved this time of the day why they could just be together. "My sweet?" Autumn said. "Yes my love" Winter

"I love you" she said, head on his chest as they swayed. This was a big deal for Autumn, she did tell him she loved him but it wasn't an all the time thing. Winter knew she loved him a lot and she just showed it in different ways.

"I love you more my sweet" he replied holding his girl close slow dancing in the safety of their little home.

A/N: this one is shorter than my other ones and the ending is so rushed, I tried to get this out yesterday and literally fell asleep trying to finish it late last night 🤣 it's not my best work but I thought the idea was quite cute so I still hope you enjoyed. As always thank you for reading
