As I was packing up what little things I had to my name my phone suddenly started ringing, as I looked down I saw a number I thought I wouldn't see in years.

As I reached for my phone, my heart began to race. The number on the screen was one I never expected to see again. It had been years since I last spoke to this person, and I wasn't sure how to feel about it.

My fingers hesitated over the answer button for a moment, but eventually, I took a deep breath and answered the call.

"Hello?" I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Hey, it's me," the voice on the other end of the line said.

I recognized the number of the person who was the first to betray me.

We were friends who shared a few laughs and secrets. But then they turned on me, spreading rumors and lies that caused me endless misery.

My first instinct was to ignore the call and move on with my packing, but my curiosity got the better of me.

What could they possibly want after all these years?

I took a deep breath and answered the phone, my voice shaking slightly.

"Hey, it's been a while," the voice on the other end said, sounding almost apologetic.

I felt a mix of anger and confusion bubbling up inside of me. How could they just act like nothing had happened? Like they hadn't ruined my life?

"What do you want, Julia?" I asked, my tone icy.

"I just wanted to say I'm sorry," they said, sounding sincere. "I know I messed up and I wanted to make things right."

"You know about the letter don't you?"

"Of course, oh you know me too well. Well since I know you were wondering I was just calling to answer that burning question. Yes, your family got nothing"

"Nothing?"

"Absolutely nothing, I mean between the law office and the police I don't know who is sicker of them"

"Jesus, I would give anything to see their faces when it got announced" To see justice served, to see my family get what they deserved for all the pain they caused.

"Oh, you'll be able to see it"

"What do you mean?"

"I know for a fact you packing everything to come down here to claim it, and just a warning, wear protective gear and look your best"

"What are they planning?"

"What are they not planning, someone even overheard them talking about how to pepper spray you"

"Wow, how did they get worse?"

"Don't know, but listen I gotta go. Good luck being the richest person in town now"

As I hung up the phone, I felt a strange mix of emotions. On one hand, I was glad to hear that my family had gotten what they deserved. But on the other hand, it was a bitter reminder of the betrayal that had led me to cut ties with this old friend in the first place.

As I continued packing, I couldn't help but think about how much my life had changed since I last spoke to her.

We used to be inseparable, always causing mischief and getting into trouble together. But then she had done something unforgivable, something that had shattered my trust in her and forced me to distance myself.

But somehow, hearing her voice on the phone again made me hate her less. Maybe it was because, compared to the crimes my family had committed, her betrayal seemed small in comparison. Or maybe it was because, deep down, I missed having someone who understood me.

As I finished packing and prepared to leave, I wondered what it would be like to see her again. Would we fall back into our old habits, or would the years of distance between us be too much to overcome? Part of me was curious to find out, but another part of me was afraid of what might happen if I let her back into my life.
