(Maia's POV)

The gravel crunched beneath my tires as I pulled into the small town's main street. It had only been two months since I left, but somehow, everything felt different.

Quieter.

Eerily still.

The towering trees and empty streets seemed wrong—like something was missing. No, like someone was missing. Y/N hadn't answered my calls in weeks, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something was seriously wrong.

Maybe I was being paranoid. Maybe she was just busy, or avoiding me because she was mad. But deep down, I knew that wasn't it. This place always gave me the creeps, but now? It was like the town itself was suffocating me, and I couldn't explain why.

God, what if she's really in trouble?

I parked my car and stepped out, trying to ignore the gnawing sense of dread tightening around my chest. As I started toward the grocery store, voices pulled me from my thoughts.

Hm, should I grab something here?

I walked down the aisle and I bumped into someone.

"Ouch!" the girl said. "Hey, watch where you're going!"

Wait, I recognize that voice.

I turned my head to see the two girls talking.

"Aren't you that Y/N's ex friend?" I asked, looking her up and down.

One blonde, the other with short, dark curls. Their faces held that strange mix of surprise and something else—awkwardness? Guilt?

The blonde crossed her arms and shot me a cold look. "Yeah, aren't you her so called new best friend?"

My heart started to race. I tried to keep my face neutral, but a spike of anxiety shot through me. "What are you talking about?"

The dark-haired girl took a step forward, her expression softening a bit. "You're Maia, right? The one Y/N came up here with?"

What the—

how do they know that?

My stomach twisted. "Yeah... How do you know that?"

"Small town," the blonde said with a shrug, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Everyone knows everyone's business."

Great, just what I need—more nosy people.

I scowled, feeling my patience wearing thin. "Okay, so what do you want?"

The dark-haired girl looked uneasy. She glanced at her friend before speaking again. "We need to talk about Y/N."

At the mention of her name, my pulse quickened.

Y/N?

"What about her?"

"She's been... distant," the blonde girl said, her voice losing its edge. "Since you've been gone, things have been off with her. Some people around town say its are weird."

Off?

What the hell does that even mean?

"I don't get it," I said, folding my arms. "Why do you care?"

The dark-haired girl glanced at the ground, guilt flickering across her face. "We don't talk to her anymore. Not after... everything."

"It's complicated," she mumbled.

I clenched my jaw. *Why is everything always complicated with these people?*

"Try me," I snapped.

The blonde sighed and spoke, her voice quieter now. "There's bad history between us and Y/N. We weren't exactly great friends to her when it mattered."

I felt a flicker of anger spark.

Great.

So now everyone's abandoning her?

The dark-haired girl sighed, rubbing her arms. "We kind of... left her behind. We didn't mean to, but it happened. But we feel always awful about it."

My chest tightened.

So Y/N's been alone in this place, with no one to turn to?

And these girls didn't even bother to check on her?

"Okay, so if you feel so guilty, why are you telling me now?" I shot back, my frustration boiling over.

"Because something's wrong," the blonde said quickly, her eyes locking onto mine. "She's been spending a lot of time with some guy. Damian. He's... off. And we're worried."

The dark-haired girl shrugged helplessly. "We don't know much. He's not from around here. But ever since he showed up, Y/N's been acting weird. No one's seen her for days."

My stomach dropped.

No.

No way.

Y/N wouldn't just disappear like that.

Something's definitely wrong.

"And you didn't call the police?" I asked, my voice rising in disbelief.

The blonde let out a bitter laugh. "Maia, this is a small town. The cops here won't do anything unless there's a body."

That's ridiculous.

How can they be so damn careless?

I clenched my fists, barely holding back my anger. "So you just... did nothing?"

The dark-haired girl's face crumpled. "We were scared, okay? We screwed up before, and we figured... she wouldn't want to hear from us."

Cowards.

"Where is she?" I demanded, my voice cold.

They hesitated, exchanging a nervous glance. "We think she's staying with him. In that house she inherited."

I turned, ready to leave, when the blonde called after me. "Maia, wait."

I stopped, barely keeping my composure. "What?"

"Be careful," she said, her voice laced with fear. "Something about that guy is off. Really off."
