The following morning dawned with a deceptive tranquility, the sun casting soft shadows through the mansion's grand windows. Damian untied me from the chair and led me back to the main part of the mansion.
His demeanor was unexpectedly light, almost jovial, as he prepared breakfast humming a cheerful tune, as if we were just another couple enjoying a lazy morning together. I watched him warily, my mind always searching for an opportunity to escape.
The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and pancakes filled the air, a stark contrast to the tension that simmered beneath the surface. Damian set a plate of food in front of me with a flourish, his smile unsettlingly serene. I took small bites, my appetite suppressed by the weight of captivity.
As I ate, a knot of anxiety twisted in my stomach. Maia's call flashed on my phone, a lifeline to the outside world and a glimmer of hope. Damian's casual demeanor only heightened my sense of unease. His unpredictable behavior kept me on edge, a constant reminder of my vulnerable situation.
After breakfast, he handed me my phone, a gesture that surprised me.
"You have a call coming in," he said, his voice light and almost teasing.
I looked at the screen and saw Maia's name flashing. Relief washed over me. Maia was my best friend, and if anyone could sense something was wrong, it was her.
Damian raised an eyebrow, his eyes glinting with a warning.
"Go ahead," he said, "but remember, I'm right here."
I took a deep breath and answered the call.
"Hello?" I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Hey! Where have you been? I've been worried sick!" Maia's voice was frantic. "DAMONE KID—"
Before she could finish, Damian snatched the phone from my hand and clamped his hand over my mouth. He gave me a sly wink before turning his attention to Maia.
"Hi, Maia," Damian said smoothly. "Sorry for the confusion. She's been a bit under the weather, but everything's fine now."
I struggled against his grip, trying to make any noise, but his hold was firm.
"Really?" Maia sounded skeptical. "She didn't mention anything. Is she okay?"
"Yes, she's fine," Damian replied, his voice dripping with false sincerity. "In fact, she's right here next to me. Just a bit too weak to talk much."
"That doesn't sound like her," Maia persisted. "Should I come back and check on her?"
Damian's eyes narrowed slightly, but his voice remained calm. "No need for that. She's getting better, and besides, you have your family to think about. Stay where you are and enjoy your time with them. She'll be back to her old self in no time."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line, and I could almost feel Maia's doubt and concern. But finally, she sighed. "Okay, if you're sure."
"Absolutely," Damian said. "Thanks for checking in. I'll make sure she calls you as soon as she's up to it."
"Alright," Maia said reluctantly. "Take care of her."
"Will do," Damian replied before ending the call.
He removed his hand from my mouth and tossed the phone onto the table. "That was so close, sweetheart," he said with a grin. "You almost ruined everything."
I glared at him, anger and frustration boiling over.
"You're insane," I spat. "How long do you think you can keep this up? Someone will figure it out."
Damian shrugged, still smiling. "Maybe, but for now, everything is under control. And as long as you behave, it will stay that way."
I wanted to scream, to lash out, but I knew it would be pointless. Instead, I took a deep breath and tried to stay calm. I had to keep my wits about me, had to wait for the right moment.
How can he be so calm?
Is he deluded or just that confident?
Damian moved closer, his eyes boring into mine. "Now, let's get you settled. We have a lot to do today."
As he led me back to his hidden room, I forced myself to remain composed. I couldn't let him see my fear, my desperation. I had to be strong, had to keep hoping.
One day, I will find a way out.
And when that day comes, I will make sure Damian pays for everything he has done.
