As I glance down at the seemingly never-ending pile of papers upon papers of bills that lay before me, I feel an overwhelming sense of helplessness washes over me. Each one is a stark reminder of the mounting debts that I have accrued, debts that I cannot seem to find a way to pay off.
It's as if the weight of the world has been placed upon my shoulders, and no matter how hard I try to lift it off, it just keeps pressing down harder and harder. I can feel the stress and anxiety building up inside of me, and I know that it's only a matter of time before I reach my breaking point.
"Girl, you need to chill," my roommate Maia says, with a knowing look.
She understands that I've been struggling lately with these bills and the stress of school.
"Take the summer to get a job and set up a payment plan like last time," she suggests, as she plops down on the couch next to me.
I know she means well, but it's easier said than done.
"I know, I know," I reply, trying to keep my voice calm. "But it just feels like every time I make progress, something else comes up. It's like I'm stuck in this cycle of never-ending bills and debts."
"Yeah but you'll find a way, kinda like that week before christmas you stumbled upon that woman selling her engagement ring for a dollar cause she just broke up with her fiance"
"Yeah but it was pretty messed up he left her for her dad"
"That and the fact both her and mom were more confused than hurt"
Suddenly, a loud knock echoed through the silent apartment, causing Maia and I to jump with fear. We exchanged worried glances, both unsure of what to do next.
"Did you invite anyone over?" I whispered, my voice shaking slightly.
"No, did you?" Maia replied, equally as scared.
With caution, we both got up from the couch and slowly made our way to the front door. Maia peered through the peephole, her eyes widening in confusion.
"Did you order something?" she asked me, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Nope," I replied, my heart racing with each passing second. The knock came again, louder this time, sending chills down our spines.
As we stood frozen in place, the sound of our pounding hearts filled the silence. Maia cautiously approached the door and looked through the peephole once more.
"Well, there's some weird delivery guy standing outside with a red envelope," she informed me.
My anxiety heightened as I imagined all sorts of terrible scenarios. Who could be delivering something at this time of night? And why a red envelope?
"That sounds so scary," I whispered.
Without warning, the delivery man shouted, "Delivery!" making us jump.
Maia turned to me, her expression a mix of confusion and apprehension. "Did you order something?" she asked.
I shook my head, my mind racing.
Who could be sending me something like this?
With trembling hands, I motioned for Maia to open the door, bracing myself for whatever lay on the other side. She opens it revealing a delivery man.
"Delivery for Y/N L/N," the man announces, his voice echoing through the hallway.
Maia suddenly snaps her head towards Y/N upon hearing the strange man's voice outside their door.
"I thought you said you didn't order anything," Maia says with concern evident in her tone.
"I didn't," I respond as I cautiously approach the door to see the man holding a red envelope with my name on it.
"Delivery for Y/N L/N," the man announces again.
I take the envelope from the man, watching as he turns around and walks away. I can't help but feel a sense of unease wash over me as she examines the strange envelope.
What could it possibly contain?
And who could have sent it?
"What does it say?" Maia says looming over my shoulder to get a closer look at this weird envelope. I gingerly extract a handwritten letter from the strange envelope. My heart races with anticipation as I begin to read the words scrawled across the page.
"Dear Y/N L/N,
We hope this letter finds you well. We know it's been years since we last spoke and we are truly sorry for the lack of communication. We have missed you terribly and it breaks our hearts to think of all the moments we have missed out on.
We have been doing a lot of thinking lately and have decided that it is time to make things right especially since we don't have much time left. As a token of our love and regret, we would like to give you all of our possessions in our death. We have been fortunate enough to accumulate quite a bit over the years and we want you to have it all.
It is our way of trying to make up for lost time. We hope that this gift will help you in some way, whether it be financially or emotionally. We want you to know that we love you and we are so proud of the person you have become.
Please forgive us for our absence in your life. We hope that one day we can make it up to you in person.
With love and regret,
Grandma and Grandpa L/N"
As I held the letter from my late grandparents in my hands, conflicting emotions swirled inside me. On one hand, I couldn't help but feel incredibly sad and alone now that they were gone. I had always felt like they were my last tether to the past, to a time before everything had become so complicated and confusing.
But on the other hand, I couldn't stop thinking about the money. In the letter, my grandparents had explained that they had been sorry for not being in contact with me all these years, and that they had decided to give me all of their possessions in order to make it up to me.
And from what I could tell, they had been quite wealthy in their time.
As I read over the letter again, I couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt for focusing so much on the financial gain. It felt wrong, somehow, to be thinking about money when my grandparents were no longer alive. But at the same time, I knew that they would have wanted me to have the resources I needed to succeed in life.
I sighed heavily and set the letter down on the coffee table, feeling lost and uncertain about what to do next. It was as if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders, but at the same time, I was more confused and uncertain than ever before.
I didn't know how to process all of these conflicting emotions, and I couldn't help but wonder if I was somehow betraying my grandparents' memory by focusing so much on their possessions.
As I sat there, lost in thought, my roommate Maia walked in and took one look at my face. "What's wrong?" she asked, concern etched on her face.
I didn't know how to answer her, didn't know how to put into words all of the complicated emotions that were swirling inside me. Instead, I just handed her the letter and watched as she read it over, her face growing more and more surprised with each passing moment.
"Holy crap," she said finally, looking up at me. "This is a lot of money."
"I know," I said, feeling guilty even as the words left my mouth. "They were the only ones who cared, you know?"
"How about this, since our lease is almost up here, how about we take a trip to your hometown that way you can say your goodbyes"
"You wanna see what they left me dont you?"
"Of course I do, but I also feel for my dear roommate"
