Obseruvos's eyes flickered towards them as they produced a raging green orb. The orb suddenly split into multiple projectiles, heading straight to the ground. Hilda leapt across the floor, barely dodging the hurling missiles. Agatha followed Hilda's lead but Patrick tripped on his feet, his screams echoing in the cave as the projectiles landed on him. The screams faded out of existence as Patrick's body glowed green, disappearing from the realm. Hilda gasped and Agatha grabbed onto her as the eye-shaped spheres started up their lights. The two jumped like water sprouting from fountains as the green orb above came to light again. Agatha began heading to the left ballista, but Hilda pulled on her sleeve.
"Commander?"
"We must wait again."
"Understood."The middle tail swung its tip and another orb merged. Hilda held Agatha's hand tightly and darted across the craggy terrain to avoid the falling orb. It exploded on impact, a green shockwave taking its place. Hilda tilted her head up to watch the green orb above grow bigger with time. Then, she and Agatha jumped to avoid the orb as it split into two and launched to the ground. Hilda and Agatha looked at each other, concern riddled across their faces.
"Hilda, when does phase four start?"
"It starts now."Obseruvos growled before it fired again, producing more projectiles from its eyes. Hilda and Agatha ran in opposite directions to avoid the piercing missiles. The missiles rained down on them like hail, becoming faster with every second. Obseruvos's projectiles stopped and the eye-shaped spheres came into view, flashing across the landscape. Hilda gestured for Agatha to come over to the left as the bullets commenced from the eye spheres. Agatha hurdled over them as the middle tail created another orb. The orb landed in front of Agatha, its ripple dazing her. Agatha coughed and tramped towards Hilda, who was already pulling on the ballista's rope. Agatha clumsily placed an arrow into the weapon as Hilda pointed it towards Obseruvos's left creature. Hilda let go of the rope and the arrow flew into the eye. The beast howled before slipping under the terrain, an imposing dark green tail replacing it. Hilda dragged Agatha away from the ballista before the tail slammed down on it, demolishing the weapon to pieces.
Agatha straightened herself as both tails spawned an orb at its tip. Hilda and Agatha ran to the right, just missing the orbs' blast by mere metres. Suddenly, two sets of floating platforms appeared on the left and middle thirds of the ground, glowing green as jade. Protective bubble forcefields were on top of the course, radiating powerful auras. The left forcefield sparkled red while the middle one glimmered yellow. The remaining creature bobbed its head and summoned two stone orbs with sparks flying off its surface—one red, the other yellow.
"We're going to have to climb the platforms, aren't we Hilda?"
"The faster we go, the safer we'll be."
"How do we know which orb is after us?"
"Keep watching and you'll see."Agatha nodded as the orbs flew closer. Hilda noticed the red orb speeding towards her and bolted to the platforms on the left. Hilda began clambering onto the platforms as Agatha hopped onto the platforms in the middle. Hilda's muscles strained with every step and she fell to her knees, pain surging through her legs. She looked back and saw Agatha struggling to jump to the next platform, a steep ramp sloping to the ground. Hilda took a deep breath and scowled, a new determination spreading on her face. She got to her feet and galloped across the platforms, ignoring the cramps forming in her legs.
Hilda finally collapsed onto the final platform, safely tucked inside the forcefield. The red orb slammed itself against the forcefield, exploding on impact. Hilda's breathing became shaky and shallow as she sat up, legs aching from her climb. She got onto her knees and stood up, looking at the yellow forcefield. Hilda's eyes widened to notice it empty and her eyes trailed further down the platforms, spotting Agatha gripping tightly onto a slanted platform. The two locked eyes and Agatha smiled sadly as she slipped and fell. Hilda's scream echoed across the realm as the yellow orb hit Agatha, both disappearing into nothingness. Hilda's chest rose and fell rapidly, each gasps a desperate gulp of air.
The platforms vanished under Hilda's feet, making her descend to the ground. Her feet tripped as she landed, but Hilda caught herself in time. The tails summoned their orbs, forcing Hilda to dart to the right ballista. Before Hilda could catch her breath, the eye spheres appeared once more and flickered their pattern. Hilda's eyes lazily followed, and she jumped and ducked to avoid the oncoming bullets, barely keeping up.
Obseruvos's remaining creature looked down at Hilda before powering the green orb above. Wearily, Hilda used one hand to pull back the rope before hastily grabbing the last arrow. Sweat rushed down her face as she directed the weapon at Obseruvos. Hilda's heart thumped loudly in her chest as the arrow took flight, penetrating Obseruvos's eye. Obseruvos recoiled and screeched, its scream deafening Hilda's ears. Obseruvos's body shimmered green and it exploded, leaving a massive green shockwave. The shockwave blinded Hilda and she looked away, using her arms to shield herself from the impact.
Thump! Hilda straightened herself up and looked to the middle to see an array of items scattered across the ground. Hilda looked around cautiously, looking for any lurking danger. Seeing no threats, Hilda treaded to the items, each step as light as a feather. Hilda peered close and saw that the pile consisted of a small brown teddy bear, worn out and raggy; a floating miniature version of Obseruvos's eye; and two small dark green eggs, speckled with light green spots.
The eye looked up at Hilda and floated to her side. It stared at the remaining items on the floor and then looked at Hilda, blinking. Hilda stared back at it, her face full of confusion. The eye blinked again like a curious animal. Hilda gaped as she put two and two together. She looked back at the items and picked up the teddy bear and the two eggs, careful not to ruin anything. Satisfied, the eye created a green light out of its iris. The light transformed into a portal and the eye seemed to smile at Hilda, inviting her to enter.
"Is this the way out?"
The eye blinked, unable to utter a word.
Hilda blinked back. "I'll take that as a yes."The eye bobbed up and down, seemingly trying to nod, and drifted into the portal, disappearing from Hilda's view. Hilda inhaled sharply before looking around the ruins of Obseruvos's cave. The fog seemed to have vanished, but the sky had darkened further. Bits and pieces of the broken ballistas remained on the terrain, littered like shells in the sand. Hilda exhaled loudly and turned her attention back to the portal. She straightened up and strode over to the portal, each step more intimidating than the last. Hilda stepped through the portal and it stood still, the sounds of Obseruvos's screams radiating from it. Then, the portal shrunk, disappearing into the void.
