The murky underground cave stood undisturbed, watchful of intruders with its protective floating eyes in the air. The ballistas stood on the rocky ground split into thirds, covered with dust. Aside from the mist above, not a single soul dared to move. Then, slowly but surely, a small portal opened up in the middle of the rocky surface. Hilda stepped out and walked to the ballista, feeling the untouched wood.
"Looks good as new," she reassured herself, looking at the portal. Suddenly, another person stumbled out of the portal, her face puzzled. Hilda beamed at the woman and gestured for her to come forward. The woman smiled back at Hilda and approached her, brushing her hair out of her right eye.
"Good to see you, Officer Agatha," greeted Hilda, curtsying to Agatha.
"Ready to report, Commander Hilda," Agatha replied, curtsying back.
Hilda opened her mouth to speak, but her attention drifted to where the portal once was. Standing in its place were two men, looking at Hilda wearily. One of them stepped forward and bowed to Hilda. Hilda curtsied back."I see you've managed to call the Overseers to summon Obseruvos. Job well done Hilda."
"Thank you, Ser Patrick."
The other man approached Hilda. "Commander Hilda, I understand you and Ser have planned this, but has this been truly thought through? Obseruvos hasn't been summoned since ancient times."
Hilda's face hardened. "We have been prepping for months, Virmir. No doubt we may face some casualties, but I am confident that Obseruvos dies today and that we will retrieve its treasures." Virmir nodded as Agatha tapped Hilda on the shoulder."When does this Obseruvos beast get here?" Agatha asked.
Hilda shrugged her shoulders. "It should be here any min-"A loud crash reverbed across the cave, startling everyone. Hilda looked up and a gasp escaped her mouth. Staring at her was a tall dark green beanstalk-like creature, a large singular eye atop its head. Curved, spiralling eyelids surrounded the eye as it blinked at the humans on the stony surface. Hilda looked to the left and the right and saw two more creatures, identical to the first. The three creatures towered over them like rainforest trees. Their beady eyes stared at Hilda and the other humans, blinking at them.
Agatha gulped. "Are all those creatures Obseruvos?"
Hilda nodded. "It's here."Obseruvos glared at the humans as a bright green glow pulsed through the middle creature. It looked directly at the ground before shooting a glaring green beam. Hilda gasped before running away from the middle and to the right section of the ground. Agatha followed after her while Patrick and Virmir headed to the left. Obseruvos's beam reached the middle and covered the entire area, shining as bright as fire. Obseruvos stopped and all three of its creatures looked over to the left. The left creature looked down at the ground and shot out its beam. Patrick quickly jumped to the middle platform, but Virmir stood still, facing the bright beam head-on. Virmir gasped for air as he stumbled over to the middle.
"I got you!" Patrick shouted, catching Virmir as he fell. Hilda gulped as she watched the two men struggle on their feet. Then, the sound of the creature towering over Hilda snapped her back to reality. Obseruvos's right creature was powering up, preparing to blast the ground below. Hilda sprinted to the middle with Agatha not far behind. The four, now reunited in the middle, struggled to find composure.
"You... did not think this through, Commander," Virmir wheezed.
Hilda's body tensed. "Perhaps I overestimated our abilities, but it's too late to back out now." Obseruvos's middle creature roared, preparing to fire its beam again. Patrick and Virmir turned to face the left but backed away upon seeing Obseruvos's left creature also prepping."To the right, quickly!" Hilda ordered, already heading to safety. Patrick, Virmir and Agatha followed along and narrowly escaped Obseruvos's attack. Hilda sighed deeply, but her relief didn't last long as she heard Obseruvos's creature above. Hilda groaned as she gestured for everyone to head back to the middle. Hilda attempted to rest but Obseruvos's creatures aimed at the ground again. Hilda ran to the left, sweating profusely as she lept off the ground last second.
Hilda's chest rose and fell hastily and she felt her legs throb. She felt someone tug at her arm.
"Hilda, look," Agatha whispered, pointing to the edge of the ground.
Hilda followed Agatha's direction and her eyes widened. Standing at the edge was an eye-shaped sphere that floated ominously.
"There's another one on the other side," Agatha added.Hilda turned and sure enough, she spotted an identical eye-shaped sphere also hovering above. Suddenly, the eye sphere began shooting a soft light. Hilda followed the light as it reached the opposite side. The light hit the other sphere, which caused it to shoot its light. Hilda looked back and forth between the edges of the realm, trying to catch up with the pattern. Then, without warning, a bullet shot at Hilda and Agatha. Hilda aggressively held onto Agatha as she jumped over the bullet, taking Agatha with her. Another bullet flew towards them, this time passing above their heads. Hilda and Agatha stayed put and jumped along with the pattern.
Virmir struggled to keep up with the pattern. He fell just as the bullet whizzed towards him, hitting him face-first. Patrick ran to his side and cradled him softly. Virmir coughed before his body glowed green and he vanished into thin air. Patrick's eyes widened as he stood up and headed to Hilda and Agatha.
"Virmir is gone!" Patrick cried.
Hilda flinched and looked at Patrick with narrowed eyes. "What do you mean he's gone?"
"He was just lying on the ground after being hit by the bullet. Next thing I know, he glows green and disappears!"
Agatha gasped. "Is he dead?"
Hilda shook her head."Unlikely. The Overseers have transported him back to the Overworld. If help arrives on time, he'll get treated for his wounds."
Patrick sighed. "You better be correct, Hilda," he warned. Hilda opened her mouth to speak but her eyes landed on the ballista in the middle, suddenly glowing blue. Hilda heard a soft sizzling noise and looked up to see a green orb above her. All three creatures looked up at the orb, pulsing power at it to slowly increase its size."Hilda, all three ballistas are lighting up and Obseruvos is powering an orb! What do we do?" Patrick asked.
Hilda winced and looked at Patrick. "We wait."
"We... we wait?"
"We wait."Patrick groaned as the trio watched the orb grow larger. The orb shone brightly as it descended to the ground and split into two. The two orbs hurled over to the opposite ends of the ground. Hilda grabbed Patrick and Agatha's hands as she jumped to avoid the orb. However, Patrick stumbled over his feet and fell to the ground, getting hit by the orb. Patrick rubbed his head as Hilda dragged him to his feet.
"That's the first phase done, four more to go!" Hilda cried with fake enthusiasm.
Patrick shot Hilda a look. "This was your ide-"
"Patrick, Hilda, I don't mean to interrupt, but I don't suppose the second phase is starting?"
Patrick and Hilda looked up to see all three creatures were glowing green, preparing to strike the ground with their beams.
Hilda gulped. "This isn't good."The three began dodging Obseruvos's lasers—jumping to the left, heading towards the right, stopping for quick breathers in the middle. As the creatures came to a stop, the eye-shaped spheres appeared again, looking vengefully at the humans. Hilda concentrated on the pattern and jumped as the first bullet fired at her. Patrick and Agatha copied Hilda's movements, narrowly escaping the final bullet. The green orb reappeared above as Obseruvos's three creatures gazed at it, powering it with its blast.
"Now do we fire a ballista?" Patrick questioned. Hilda looked between the ballistas, a faint blue aura radiating from them. She nodded, running to the middle ballista. Patrick and Agatha ran after her as Hilda pulled back the twisted rope, locking it into place. Patrick hastily grabbed a huge arrow and passed it to Agatha, who placed it into the ballista. Hilda continued to grip the rope, aiming the machine directly at the middle creature's eye. Hilda let her fingers slip from the rope and the arrow soared through the air, stabbing the middle creature's eye. The middle creature roared and fell backwards, disappearing into the void underneath. Agatha and Patrick cheered, but Hilda ran to the left as a shadow loomed over the ground. Standing in the place of the middle creature was a towering dark green tail, its tip as pointy as darts. Agatha and Patrick scurried away as the tail launched itself at the ballista, destroying the weapon.
"Obseruvos can do that?" Agatha cried. Hilda nodded as she looked at the remaining creatures and the newly arrived tail.
"Brace yourselves, everyone. Phase three is starting," Hilda announced, backing towards the edge of the ground.
