Chance walked into his family home exhausted after booking Victoria. That was the downside of his job, being forced into these awkward situations because of his in-laws and their inability to follow the law. Sighing, he knew it was irrational to feel anger at the Newmans for being the Newmans. The detective knew what he was getting into when he married Abby. Speaking of his wife, she clearly wasn't thrilled at his arresting her sister.
"Chance?!" He looked up to see an irate Abby standing at the top of the stairs. "How could you? How could you arrest Victoria?" Victoria had been through so much, now she was being arrested? It was a miracle that Ashland Locke didn't kill her, she should be allowed to live her life in peace. Of course, Abby knew that she was biased in her train of thoughts.
Taking a deep breath before answering, "It's my job, Abby. Victoria committed a crime. She has to be punished for it." Chance was so tired; this was the last thing he needed. "I can't turn a blind eye because she's your sister."
Abby scoffed, that wasn't what bothered her. "That's not why I'm annoyed." Chance raised an eyebrow, which pissed her off even more. "I would never ask you to ignore a crime just because a member of my family committed it. When I asked why you arrested Victoria, I meant you as in why did you do it? Couldn't you have let one of the other officers taken it, like you did when Chelsea was arrested?" Her detective husband quickly looked away as she mentioned Chelsea. There was a very specific reason why he didn't arrest Chelsea personally, a reason that he prayed every day that Abby would never find out.
Luckily for Chance, Abby didn't think anything of his sudden turn at the mention of Chelsea. She would be kicking herself for that later. "Why didn't you arrest Chelsea, you never explained?" Abby was shocked to see the distressed look on her husband's face. "What's that look for?"
Chance swore under his breath, he was wearing his guilt on his face. Abby was noticing, this wasn't good. Struggling to come up with an answer he blurted out the first thing that came to mind, "We had other officers available that day. We didn't, the day of your sister's arrest." He was surprised at how quickly that lie came out. The Chancellor looked at this wife who was nodding her head in acceptance.
Abby didn't question her husband. That answer was logical and with her lack of police knowledge accepted the lie easily. She had no reason to assume Chance was lying to her. Why would she? The youngest Newman sibling was in the dark about so much when it came to her husband. That blind faith Abby had in Chance was going to blow up in her face, big time.
Abigail Newman Chancellor stormed into her home, slamming the front door behind her. Tears clouding her vision, she ran upstairs to her bedroom. Flinging herself on the bed like a heartbroken teenager, Abby finally let herself go. Sobbing, she thought about Chance's betrayal; it was bad enough that he cheated, but to publicly admit it like he did. In a tone that was far too casual for her liking. Did he not care that he was humiliating her, that he blindsided her? The more she thought about it, the more her devastation turned to rage.
A knock at the door had her slowly putting herself together. She told whoever was knocking to come in, wincing when she saw that it was Jill, Chance's grandmother. Jill was worried about her from the moment she heard the front door slam. The older woman had walked out to the living room to greet her, but all she saw was a disorientated Abby running up the stairs. Knowing that she had gone to Chelsea's trial to support Chance during his testimony, Jill assumed that something horrible had come out.
Upon seeing the question in Jill's face Abby realized that she had two options; one she could protect Chance and lie to his grandmother, or two she could tell Jill what happened. She took a page out of father's book and chose to be vengeful. She told Jill everything, how Chance had sex with Chelsea and didn't even have the decency to tell her to her face. She had to find out along with everyone else on the stand.
