"Quinn? Quinn! Quinn can you hear me?" I yell into the phone. I hang up. " we gotta go," I tell Nick and I grab my car keys, my shoes and I run out he door with Nick on my tail.
"Dude. What happened?" He asked me once we reached the car. My heart is thumping so loud, I'm not even sure if I heard the question right.
"The girls. They were driving. And something happened on the other end where I heard a scream, a loud crash and silence to follow," I inform him as we pull out to the front of the neighborhood.
"What?" Nick asks me like I'm joking. I look at him and stare him in the eye. "Your not kidding are you." I shake my head and keep driving. There is absolutely nothing worse than having your best friend and the girl you love in danger.
When we reach were the wreck had happened, traffic was backed up so far that we couldn't even see that was happening.
"Nick," I say.
"Yeah?"
"Where's the closest hospital?" I ask.
"That one," he says and points to the tall St. Oliver Hospital building. I glance at the traffic for a little longer. We haven't moved in a few minutes and there's a police officer just a few cars in front of us. I unbuckle and get out of the car in the middle of traffic.
"What are you doing Reid?" Nick asks me.
"Follow me," I say and motion him to come with me as I jog toward the police officer. Nick finally catches up, which is good. I may need backup.
"Who are you?" The officer asks.
"We are friends, like best friends with the girls that were just in that accident," I say to him.
"And how do you expect me to relive you?"
"This," I say and find a photo of all of us at the pre prom party. I show it to him and he nods, still not completely believing us.
"What are there names?" He asks us.
"Quinn Darby was the driver and Aura Bell was the passenger," Nick explains.
"How did you find out that information?" He presses.
"I was on the phone with her. Here look," I say and pull up my recently called on my phone and show it to him.
"Fine. But what do you want me to do?" He asks us.
"Watch my car while we run into that hospital to go and see them," I order. Te police officer nods his head and I begin running with Nick on my tail. He's not the most athletic person, you can tell by the way he looks, but I can save that he's pushing along just fine.
St. Oliver's is a very neat and orderly hospital, which is gods because without the huge receptionist sign, I probably would have never gotten any information.
"We need information about that car crash right outside of this hospital that happened today. Our bet friends were in it," I explain to the lady.
"Are you family?" She asks, pointing her pen at Nick. He shakes his head. "And are you family?" She asks me, rotating the pen towards me.
"No," I say quietly.
"Well then I'm sorry, best friends or not. You don't get any information unless your family," She tells us. We take a seat in the waiting room chairs when I removed something. I pull out my phone and press call next to Missy's contact. After the fourth ring, she picks up.
"Reid. What do you need? I'm in school right now. This better be important," Missy whispers. She must be in the bathroom.
"Look. I need you to give me Mrs. Darby's number," I say to her.
"Why? What happened?" She asks.
"Quinn and Aura were in car accident an hour ago. I need you to give me Mrs. Darby's number," I order her.
"Uh. Okay. I'll send it to you. Good luck," she says and ends the phone call. A few seconds later, a message from Missy pops up. I enter the number into my phone and press call.
"Hello? Mrs. Darby?" I say into the phone.
"Oh Reid! Hi! What's wrong?" Quinn's mom can always tell when something happens with me. I don't know why, but she can.
"Quinn and Aura were in a car accident. We need some information and-"
"What hospital are you at? Who's with you? How long has it been since it happened?" She ask me.
"Nick and I are at St. Oliver's an it's been about an hour," I tell her.
"I'll be right there," she says and hangs up. When I turn my head, I see that Nick is calling his parents. When he hangs up, we sit there in silence until the front desk lady calls me up to the desk, along with Nick.
"It would help if you would give off any information about these two girls to help us find their parents," she says. I glance over at Nick.
"None of this information can ever be repeated. The passenger's name is princess Aura Bell. She's staying with me while the kingdom of Exquire is in the middle of a war, so the queen sent Aura with me to live a normal life until the school year was over in June. Everyone else was too oblivious to notice that she was a princess," I explain.
"Okay. I can't tell I your lying or not. But she does look like the princess, so I might as well believe you," The lady says. "What about the other one?"
"Quinn Maria Darby is sixteen and is the worst driver on the face of this planet. She has two parents but one is off in the Air Force, like my dad. That's how we bonded. She has two older siblings who are all married off to someone and she is completely, and utterly stubborn. Her mom is on her way," I explain.
"Thank you. Do you know how to reach the king or queen by any chance?" She ask me. I stand there, all out of ideas with my heart and mind racing, it's hard for me to focus.
"Do you have their phones?" Nick asks.
"I don't know. I'll have to check," the lady says and leaves to go around the back to find their phones. We so back down and wait. Nick's leg is bouncing up and down and my hands are folded across my chest. The door opens and Quinn's mom, along with mine, rush in. I catch a glimpse of tear tracks on Mrs. Darby's face, but who wouldn't. My mom rushes over to me and embraces me. After she let's go the door opens again and Nick's mom runs in.
"Have you found out any information?" Quinn's mom asks me.
"We're not family," I remind her. The lady from the front desk walks back with a box of phones.
"You can look through here," the lady says and tries to walk away, but Quinn's mother stops her to talk about something. I get up and grab the phone box for Nick and I to look for Quinn and Aura's phone.
"Start looking," I say as I place it between us.
"Roger that," Nick say and starts sifting though the piles of phones.
"Thank you," I hear Quinn's mom say quietly. "Quinn seems to be okay but since Aura was the passenger, she has to undergo surgery for her arm. Quinn is on bed rest and has broken her right leg," Mrs. Darby says. I ball my hands up into fists and squeeze them tight. I close my eyes for a second. Then Nick taps me I the back and I begin shuffling though the boxes again.
"This one's Quinn's," Nick says and hands the phone to her mom.
"Do you boys want anything while I go and get coffee for everyone?" My mom asks. I shake my head.
"I'll just have a water," Nick replies.
"Okay," My mom says sweetly and walks of to get everyone's stuff. I feel for her. How she's trying to keep everyone in a uplifted mood. I keep looking though the bin until I spot a white phone with a fiery red case. It's aura's.
"This is aura's phone," I say and click it on. It still works. Nick watches me as I scroll through the contacts to reach her family. I don't see her mom or dad, maybe they don't have mobile phones, so I just click on the nearest one. Her brother.
"Who are you calling, dear?" Nick's mom asks me.
"Oh, I'm just calling her brother," I say. She nods her head and sits down in the chair next to Nick's, she kisses his head and ruffles his hair. Usually that annoys him but he seems to focused to even notice.
"Hello? Aura?" Her brother asks.
"Um.. Hey. This is Reid marks, the guy who is sort of protecting your sister," I say.
"Oh. Why do you have aura's phone?" He asks me. He sounds like he just woke up.
"Well, she was in a car accident with one of our friends and we needed to call family members to tell them," I explain.
"What?" He yells.
"Sorry," I whisper.
"So this was your fault?" He asks.
"No, no, no. You see, she was T-boned in a car," I say to him.
"I for know what that is but tell me where you are so I can come," he orders.
"We are in St. Oliver's hospital in Miami Florida," I say to him as I keep pacing.
"I'll be right there," he says and hangs up. I put Aura's phone in the seat where I was sitting and begin pacing again.
"New information on Aura Bell. Are there any family members for her here yet?" The front desk lady asks.
"No," I say shaking my head sadly. Hoping that Prince Xavier would get here soon.
"I wonder what it could be," Nick says.
"Me too," I agree. My mom comes back with the last round of drinks. Her coffee and Nick's water.
"Thanks Mrs. Marks," he says and takes a swig.
"No problem," she says and goes back to taking to the other mothers. Luckily, it looks like we've been the only accident all day. I look at the traffic. Still the way it was an hour ago, which is good because I don't want my car to be gone.
"Reid honey where's your car?" My mom asks, sitting down in the seat next to me.
"A police man is watching it," I inform her. I hear a faint okay and she gets up to go and talk again. I hear the door open and it's Xavier.
"Where is she?" He asks me. His outfit looks absolutely normal which must mean that he threw on normal clothes while he was in the car. "They just got new information," I tell him pointing to the front desk.
"Thank you," he says and practically sprints to the front desk. It takes him a few minuets to get all of the information, but it takes him longer to process it.
"What is it?" I ask him anxiously
"She's in a coma."My whole world is black.
