House of Funerals

Amber hurried up to their room as soon as they got home, leaving Lyla in the foyer. Before she could follow, Nina gently pulled her aside, an apologetic smile on her face. "Hey, I'm really sorry about earlier."

Lyla quickly waved her off, not wanting to dwell on the discomfort. She understood that Nina hadn't meant any harm, and she certainly wasn't in the mood to rehash the incident. "Don't worry about it, America. I'm fine. It was just a lot to process." she replied, her tone lightening as a smile crept onto her face.

The two girls exchanged a moment of silent understanding, their smiles reflecting the bond they shared. In that stillness, Lyla felt grateful that Nina hadn't pressed further into the topic. After a brief pause, Nina cleared her throat, her expression shifting to a more serious one. "The funeral is tomorrow... I think you should come."

Lyla's brows knitted together in surprise, the suggestion catching her completely off guard. "What? Why would you want me there?" she asked, her voice laced with uncertainty, a mix of anxiety and surprise stirring within her.

"You deserve to be there," Nina replied softly, her gaze steady and earnest. "Plus, I could really use the support."

Lyla fell silent, processing the invitation. The thought of attending another funeral stirred up a whirlwind of memories; the last time she had been to one was for her mother, and that was a train wreck that still haunted her. She didn't know Sarah well, certainly not in the same way Nina had, but the idea of being there for her friend tugged at her heart. After a moment of hesitation, she took a deep breath and nodded. "Okay, I'll go."

The next day, Lyla emerged from the bathroom, her figure enveloped in an all-black outfit that effortlessly clung to her frame. Admittedly, it was pretty easy to put together because pretty much all of her wardrobe consisted of dark items, something that Amber constantly had something to say about.

As Lyla stepped into the room, her gaze settled on Fabian, who was lounging casually on Amber's bed, his posture relaxed yet attentive. Amber, a flurry of energy, was perched at her vanity, staring at herself in the mirror. However, it was Nina who drew Lyla's focus. She stood before the mirror, her expression somber as she adjusted her clothing. "Are you sure it's alright if I come?" Lyla asked, her voice barely above a whisper, tinged with uncertainty.

Nina turned her head slightly, her lips curving into a forced, melancholic smile. "Of course. You're the one that's related to her." she said softly, her eyes conveying an intensity that made Lyla sigh and shake her head. "Yeah, but still... You knew her better than I did." Lyla's attempt at modesty was met with Nina's unwavering gaze. "Lyla, I want you there." she insisted, staring Lyla down as if daring her to say more.
