Taylor shifted to rest against my side, sniffing like she was trying not to cry. I didn't understand quite why she had got so emotional over this, since really, I'd just done something little to cheer her up, but I was glad she appreciated it.
"Thank you." She whispered. "I know this wasn't what you planned for tonight."
"Princess everything with you is perfect no matter what." I murmured to her, slowly tracing a hand up and down her spine, knowing it soothed her. "And I don't have to stay long if you're busy." My eyes were stuck on the little toddler in Taylor's arms, suckling on the bottle, staring up at her mother. Abby was the spitting image of Taylor, just like the photos, and it was so surreal to see her in real life.
"I wish you could have met her when she wasn't so grumpy." Taylor sighed. "She's just sick, I'm so sorry."
"Do you want me to leave?" I offered, and Taylor's teeth snagged on her lip. "Be honest with me princess, if you need me to give you some space I will. I just wanted to bring you some food and some help."
"I'd like you to stay, if that's okay with you." She whispered. "But Abby's sick so..." I placed a finger over Taylor's lips.
"I'll stay." I murmured, and she managed a tired smile.
For the next little while, we just hung out while Abby was soothed and quieted down slightly. We ate, and then we went to sit in the living room. Abby started wriggling in Taylor's arms, so Taylor set her down and she toddled over to some blocks on the floor and bent to grab one. Taylor sighed, tucking her legs up on the couch and resting her head against my arm.
"Thank you Travis." She sighed. "I know it's hard me having a daughter and all."
"I wouldn't change it for the world." I kissed her hair and Taylor smiled.
"Hey, come here my sweet girl." She reached out her arms to Abby, who looked up at her. "Mommy wants to tell you something."
"Mommy!" Abby toddled back over, and Taylor lifted her into her lap, turning her to face me.
"You see my love?" Taylor crooned, pointing to me. "You see?" Abby nodded. "This is Travis. He's Mommy's special friend now and he wants to say hello."
"Hi Abby." I smiled at the toddler, who blinked up at me with Taylor's blue eyes. After a moment, Abby ducked her face into Taylor's shirt and hid.
"Oh, sweet girl." Taylor laughed quietly, stroking her back. "She's just shy sometimes." She told me apologetically. "Come on sweetie, say hi for Mommy." She whispered in Abby's ear.
After a moment, the toddler peeked up at me from where she hid in Taylor's chest. I smiled gently, waving my hand where she could see. Abby giggled, sticking out a hand to wave back. I smiled wider than I ever had in my life as she lifted her head and smiled at me.
"Hi." She said.
"Travis." Taylor whispered in her ear.
"Twa-viis!" Abby attempted, and Taylor and I both smiled at her. That was the cutest thing I had ever heard, and my heart was already melting for this little girl. She already had me completely wrapped around her tiny little fingers, just like her mother did. Taylor kissed Abby's hair, nuzzling her cheek gently. I watched, entranced.
Then Abby's face fell, and she hiccupped before starting to cry again. Taylor cooed to her, standing up to rock Abby gently against her shoulder, up and down the room. She must have had a good few minutes before getting upset again, and she wailed as Taylor rocked her. A few minutes passed and I noticed that Taylor was soon getting upset, tears welling in her eyes as her daughter cried like she was in pain. It hurt my heart to see Taylor so upset, to see Abby so upset, and I got to my feet.
