As I waited for Taylor to come to bed, my phone started to ring and I reached for it. I was surprised to see Andy's contact coming up on the screen, and I immediately answered.
"Coach." I greeted him by the title automatically.
"Kelce!" Andy responded. "Glad I caught you. Got a minute?"
"Yeah course, what's up?" I asked.
"Look." Andy sighed. "I know you were devastated when you lost out on that spot int he team, we were all devastated I think. I've been keeping an eye on things, and one of my players just bailed out on the season with a shattered leg and I need someone who knows their shit to replace him. So what do you say, you interested?"
As I processed his words, my dreams flashed before my eyes. All the work I'd put in, the friends I'd made, the hours and hours of training and games and sweat I'd pushed through. It had all been so close, and now it dangled in front of me again.
"Yes sir, it would be an honour." I said slowly. "But you said Mahomes took my place, and I've gotten another job now."
"Right, with your girl." Andy said, and I made a small sound of confirmation. "And all you want is to marry her right?" I'd told him my thoughts about starting to think about proposing to Taylor, and I smiled.
"Of course sir, it's my dream." Pausing, I thought about it. "Yeah, I mean nothing compares to this right?" I sighed, my mind drifting to the woman I'd fallen in love with just down the hall. Who was I kidding? I couldn't leave her like this just for a job.
"So what are your boys like, they good?"
"I mean..." I paused. "Yeah, I got good players I guess, but they can do it on their own or with another coach as well."
"So would Taylor come with you?"
"Yeah, I know what you mean." I murmured. Taking the job would mean so much more money than I was earning right now. I'd be better able to support Taylor and Abby and our new little baby, we'd have more time with our babies, with each other, and they'd be set up for life after a while.
"Talk me through that boy on your team as well, you mentioned someone with talent that you've been mentoring."
"I mean..." I huffed. "The kid is great but I don't really care for it like my own so that doesn't play into it as much." I felt bad, but it was true. The boys on my team were great, but if I had a better opportunity I wouldn't think too hard about handing them off to another coach.
"So how attached are you to that team? I know it can get pretty personal and it'd be hard to leave them."
"We haven't been together for that long." I'd only put together the team within a few months. "And I mean of course there are some feelings but I'm not that attached so I'll be okay."
"Travis." Andy sighed. "Just come to Kansas City for a meeting, we can talk it over, how about that?"
"Yeah my girlfriend can handle that I'm sure."
"I know you won't leave her for this job, and I'm not expecting you too. We can make this work with her so that you still have your family. I know she's important."
"I'm telling you, she's like an anchor for me." I sighed, unable to even think about a world where I didn't have Taylor. She was my anchor, my rock, my princess. "Yeah I think that can work."
