Taylor settled in to my family dynamic easily, and everyone absolutely doted on Abby of course. She was in-between Bennett and Elliotte's age so fit in with my nieces easily, and the four little girls, god, they could have been biological cousins. They all looked so similar.
The whole neighbourhood was bustling with new years celebrations already, the late afternoon fading slowly into evening as we started cooking some dinner and getting some food out for the kids. Taylor was just starting to wean Abby off breastfeeding, in the prospect of the new baby and her age and tried to give her some mashed food, but Abby wasn't having it so Taylor gave in and just breastfed her instead. I was by her side most of the night, loving spending that time with her and Abby with my family as well.
"Baby?" Taylor touched my arm, and I looked over at her as I talked to Kylie. "Could you take Abby for a second? She spit up on my dress and I need to go clean it off."
"Oh, hey do you want to wear one of my dresses?" Kylie offered. "I've got heaps that would fit you." Taylor smiled, obviously delighted at the gesture of friendship.
"Yeah, that'd be great. Thank you." She nodded, and I took Abby, smiling as I watched Kylie and Taylor walk over towards the stairs together.
"Twavis." Abby said, and I looked at her, smiling.
"Yes that's right little girl." I jogged her gently. "You're so smart." Abby giggled, clapping her hands together.
"You're so good with her Travis." Mom appeared by my side, waving at Abby, who waved back. "It's so incredible to see how much you've changed being with Taylor. She's really made an honest man out of you, hasn't she?"
"Yeah, I guess she has." I murmured. "She's one hell of a woman."
Mom smiled, offering her arms out to Abby, who immediately ducked her face into my neck to cling to me. Warmth rushed through me at the little motion; Abby wanted to stay in my arms. That was the most incredible feeling in the world. This little girl had accepted me into her life and now she actively wanted me to hold her. For the first time, I truly and fully felt like I was starting to become a father to her, even if it wasn't biological. Blood only meant so much, and I'd love her forever, my daughter or not.
A few minutes later, I heard footsteps come down the stairs and turned around to see Kylie skipping ahead, a proud smile on her lips. Taylor walked down behind her, and my mouth almost dropped open. She was wearing a simple ribbed dress, the maroon fabric clinging to her body like a glove down to her ankles. The thin straps over her shoulders exposed the smooth curve of her collarbones. She glowed.
Taylor looked up at me when she came down the last steps and went pink when she saw me staring, her eyes dipping down a little like she was embarrassed. Abby squealed and smiled widely at her mother as Taylor walked over, tugging slightly at the fabric.
"I know it's a bit tight but it's the only one that fit properly." She mumbled.
"You're gorgeous." I whispered, and her cheeks flushed even darker. "God princess, you're absolutely beautiful."
"Thank you." Taylor smiled bashfully
"Mom take Abby for a second?" I asked, and Mom happily took the toddler from my arms, who went without a fuss. Without a moment of hesitation, I stepped closer to Taylor and took her face in my hands to kiss her. She giggled as I claimed her lips with mine, unable to help myself even though we were in a room full of my family members.
