"How the fuck did you accidentally drug a whole bunch of kids at Cicero's house?"
"Ask Richie that."
The kitchen flickered with dim lights as the sun was barely beginning to light up the sky, but the kitchen was alive than ever. In the clear container, a stack of lemons and parsley were sitting in it until Carmy moved to grab a lemon before he began cutting it up. The tale of Richie slipping a whole bottle of Xanax into a whole pitcher of a kids drink was infamous despite it happening twenty-four hours ago and Odessa laughed at it because it sounded so ridiculous to be true. It might've been true and what if there was a warrant for Carmy's or Richie's arrest? Honestly, Dez didn't mind if either of them went to jail because fuck it.
The sounds of knives hitting against the cutting boards rang out throughout the kitchen, emitting a nice tune since their knives sliced through vegetables in sync. It was in tune with each other and Odessa found the cutting of vegetables to be comforting.
She couldn't sleep again after yesterday so she went to visit her father then she went to work in order to clear her mind.
"We should go rollerskating or something. I'm fuckin' tired of work, work, work." suggested Odessa with a soft shrug of her shoulders and she slathered some garlic seasoning onto the raw, red beef. She hated the smell of raw meat that she had to cover her nose with the sleeve of her blouse.
"Sounds like you're asking me on a date or something." mused Carmy as he placed another lemon on the cutting board and he curled his tattooed fingers back, the steel of his sharpened knife easily sliced through the yellow skin of the lemon.
"In your dreams, Caramel." said Odessa as she took off her gloves and she stepped back. She felt like something was wrong or missing, causing her to fall silent. She needed to know what it was before she could fully panic and she looked over at Carmy. "Is there anything missing, chef?"
"Nah, looks good, chef."
Odessa hated that fucking title: chef, chef, chef. No wonder why Tina heard it as Jeff. She covered the seasoned meat with a sheet of aluminum foil and she bent down to put the meat to roast in the preheated oven. She wiped the light sweat off of her forehead with the back of her wrist and she looked over at Carmy. "Rollerskating idea is still there. We can invite Sydney, definitely not Richie, Ebra, Marcus—"
Both of the chefs jumped back in surprise when there was a loud sound coming from the bathroom and it sounded as if it was a loud explosion, causing Odessa to immediately worry. She followed after Carmy as he rushed into the bathroom where a singular toilet was and water churned within the rusty pipes, causing it groan loudly as if it were a human.
"Shit. I know what this is—"
Immediately, water exploded from the pristine white toilet and spilled all over the place. It splashed onto the speckled floor and the wave of toilet water rushed onto Carmy's clothes. The water completely soaked him and he held up his tattooed arms to cover himself from the disgusting toilet water. Some of it even landed onto Odessa's clothes as she immediately stepped back with a loud gasp, but she covered her mouth in fear that the water might've spilled into her mouth.
"Fuck! Call Fak!" shouted Carmy, his face was reddened lightly out of anger.

Odessa felt scared. Worried.
There was so much going on in her life, but so little at the same time and all of it made her chest feel so tight like someone were tying up her lungs together. It made her want to cry until her nose was snotty and her throat to hurt. Odessa knew that she was weak and totally useless to everyone in The Beef, but she really was trying to be a better person. Her mother would say that she was a good person because she was so forgiving and she was so sweet. Odessa didn't know if her mother was true though and she would often go to her father for some sort of advice like he were a shaman. Sometimes, she would forget that he really was her father and not just some spiritual guide.
But ever since he entered that stupid comatose, Odessa felt like she was going to die from her anxiety and it felt like the world was going to crush down onto her, squishing her into nothing but a tiny splat.
She didn't even know what to do at this point and she needed to see her father again. She needed to hear his voice again and see his eyes boring into hers.
Odessa stormed out of the kitchen through the back door after an unexpected wave of emotions and she knew it happened because she felt so weak. The stress and anxiety made her want to curl up into a ball and die. To be completely erased off of the earth. She had to sit down on a crate in order to undo the lid of her inhaler, but even the medicine wasn't helping.
"Fuck, fuck." hissed Odessa as she placed a hand against her chest and her heart was beating too fast that she truly believed it would stop completely. She inhaled then exhaled sharply even though the smell of trash made her want to puke and she didn't turn at hearing the back door open. She didn't care if it was Richie or Carmy or anything because that person could go fuck themselves for all she cared.
"Hey, chef." said Sydney, hesitating at seeing Odessa near the teal colored dumpsters and she felt awkward as she looked around to see if anyone else was there. She gripped the black trash bag a little tighter and she hurled it into the trashcan. "You..you okay? What happened?" asked Sydney as she awkwardly kicked at the gravel on the ground.
"Nothing, I'm fine." answered Odessa as she took another huff from her inhaler and she inhaled sharply. She really needed to stop or go to therapy in order for her anxiety to stop being so severe. "I'm—I just haven't been feeling that good and I know I'm lacking in the kitchen and all and-and I'm super fucking sorry—"
Sydney merely nodded at Odessa's stumbling words and she spoke, her annoying voice was calm,"Hey, relax. I-I get it. The kitchen can be super fuckin' scary, but it's..it's do or die, basically. You can't just freak out and freeze up, you have to go in the moment—"
A chorus of voices had rung out from the building after a spark had emitted from the power box outside and the two women rushed back inside to be met with total darkness. "The fuck is going on?" asked Carmy as he angrily stormed into the kitchen.
"What does it look like, Jeff? Power went out." huffed Tina as she walked by and she evidently shoulder bumped Sydney.
Odessa pinched at the bridge of her nose and she groaned softly. "Fuck. I'll go get an ice chest from my apartment."
