when in doubt

Five years ago, back when she was a fresh graduate, Odessa used to super like Carmy, but that was way back before all of this shit. Before her mother died, before her father went into a comatose, before anything really. Before she felt so trapped in a box and the air within it was beginning to leave from that box.
It was strange because she didn't know what the appeal was — even five years ago.
Was it because Carmy — no offense — looked like an exotic, rare bird? Was it because he smoked ten packs of cigarettes each day and he was super duper strong? Or was it because of his knowledge of cooking that made her incredibly attractive to her?
It was a mystery to those around her and nobody knew why she used to like him. Carmy didn't even know she used to like him either because he was hung up on his old childhood crush — probably — and he probably saw Odessa as a coworker instead of a person.
But everything was okay though because when in doubt, Odessa would always find a reason to freak the fuck out.
Even though Odessa liked everything — she even likes pickles in her food — she absolutely hated the dark and it would make her feel super uncomfortable. Maybe it was because she had a childhood fear of the dark since she could never tell what was lurking or hiding in it.
"Listen, I know you're busy, but we need an electrician." said Odessa as she talked into her phone and she fanned herself with her hand as she paced outside. Nothing worked in The Beef and Carmy ordered everyone to make sure their ingredients weren't going to be spoiled. None of the fridges nor the gas line worked. So, Odessa was glad that her father's old coworkers kept in touch with her. "It's my..friend's restaurant that doesn't have any power or gas. He'll pay you for your service and everything."
There was an undetermined silence on the other line and Odessa was ready to get mad until the man on the other line agreed. "Okay, thank you so much, Larry." A pause. "My dad is doing okay. Thanks, bye."
Immediately, Odessa hung up after that and she felt giddy because she actually did something good for once. Her giddiness quickly fell at seeing Sydney and Tina rushed over with a ton of building materials from the next building over where it was in construction. Odessa opened her mouth to ask, but Sydney immediately said to her,"Catering! We gotta use the meat before it spoils. Outdoor service."
