this night has opened my eyes

A young man with wired glasses and his smile wide, his dark hair was slicked back to show off his sharp features and crisp black suit. Besides him, an equally young woman with a subtle face looked into the camera that was just off screen and she would be absolutely beautiful if her frown didn't crease on her face. Draped over their pictures, the golden necklace of the Star of David glimmered against the lit up candles and it smelled faintly of artificial chocolate. Streams of smoke swirled around each other, dancing with each other as they evaporated into the air and the apartment was still.
Odessa watched with weary eyes as the smoke rose up from the candle and she felt her lips twitch down into a frown, wrinkles creasing into her face like how often her mother's face did that. She stared at the recent pictures, old family pictures, and she couldn't even say anything about it.
She didn't even know how to feel about the ofrenda she made at the last minute because her father's passing was of last month and her eyebrows were pulled together, lost in thought. Something didn't feel right. She reached out, gently pulling out the flowers to make them look more full and more bloomed out. Maybe that was what was missing? Odessa stepped back, her eyebrows were furrowed together again.
The sounds of the shower pattered against white tile walls, and rusty pipes groaned loudly as hot steam began rising against the mirror. The pipes stopped groaning with the twist of the shower and the curtains were pulled open.
Odessa quickly left the bedroom to give Carmy some space to get dressed for work and she sat on the floor with her sketchbook that was left open on the glass coffee table. Her face creased in confusion.
She doesn't remember opening her sketchbook.
Scooting closer, Odessa looked down and she grinned softly at seeing a crudely sketched stick figure of Carmy with a fake angry expression on his face.
"Har, har." mused Odessa as she looked at the stick figure and she began flipping through the colored pages. Different hairstyles were sketched in the clear page, different makeup looks that involved sparkly gems, big winged eyeliner reminiscent of Amy Winehouse. In another section of her sketchbook, there was different examples of men fashion trends, hairstyles, and etc.
Odessa found it especially interesting because women were often the trend makers and face of fashion. Tapping her lead pencil against her chewed bottom lip, Odessa tried to imagine Carmy with different cut hair that she imagined in her head. His hair was getting too long anyways and she always wanted to cut it. Her nail gently traced the outline sketch of one hairstyle and she closed the sketchbook after a moment of long deliberation.
