the theory of catharsis

The wallpaper consisted mostly of an ugly green pistachio color that resembled of a swamp and the patterns were a frog resting onto a lily pad. It was something straight out of a Stephen King novel and Elise Harrington (née Sinclair) stared at her little cousin in shock at those five words that formed a question. What did she think? Elise knew that her baby cousin was going through a rough patch of her life — she broke most of the rules in her own religion that she was so proud of — but this? This? This apartment is the complete opposite of Odessa and Elise couldn't even find her own words to express how shitty this place is. Usually, Elise made sure her opinions were voiced, but this time, she couldn't.
Her calloused hand reached out to touch the swamp colored wallpaper and her face fell in horror after seeing the wallpaper bristle at the touch of her hand. It felt as if goop seeped through her fingers and she refused to gag. Maybe Odessa was going to renovate this whole space to forget about her ex? Maybe the apartment rent was cheap?
"Cousin, I love you, but what the fuck?" asked Elise in complete shock and disgust as she rushed to the small kitchen to wash out her hands. She flicked her wet hand mindlessly above the frying sink. "Please tell me that this is a sick joke or-or something."
Odessa shrugged and she dug through her wool skirt to reveal something. "I already signed the lease." said the brunette, her keys jingled as they dangled from above her hand. "Paid off some stuff..got this pad here."
Elise groaned in frustration. "This is like a horror movie! If Scarlet was here, she would've whooped your ass for even thinking about getting this place." said the dyed blonde as she looked around and she placed her hands on her hips as she looked around with her eyebrows furrowed in wild curiosity. "Where'd you even get the money to..do all of this anyways?"
Odessa shrugged, her fingers were tugging at the sleeves of her beloved sweater. "My parents. My mom had this insurance policy thingy that she gave my dad when she died and when my dad died too, he gave me all of his money in his will." said Odessa, scratching at her neck. "It was like all this money combined and I used it for school and stuff."
Elise nodded, letting out a soft hum as she looked around for a second look, and she sighed wearily as she ran her fingers through her dyed hair. "So..any news or voicemails from him?" asked Elise, watching as Odessa took off her jacket before she got some laundry detergent and vinegar ready in a spray bottle.
"Nope." sighed Odessa, grabbing a metal scraper and she sprayed the mix of chemicals onto the wall. "I haven't seen him at those Al-Anon meetings we agreed to go to. Fak came to me when I was doing a client's hair and he just started..rambling! Saying about how Carmy was stuck and how he, Carmy, loves me. But I-I haven't heard anything from him since—"
