I got home and saw my mom with a guy. They were talking and laughing. They looked really into each other.

"Uh, Mom?"

"Oh! Hey, Melody! Come meet Richard."

The man sitting in my house was none other than Mr. Jefferson.

"Uh, hello."

"Melody, nice to meet you."

Why is he acting like we've never met before? He's the reason why I'm working with Kyle.

"How long have you 2 known each other?" Melody asked.

"About 3 hours." Richard said.

"3 hours?!"

I grabbed my mom's arm and dragged her to the other room.

"Isn't he great?"

"Yeah. Are you insane?!"

"What?"

"3 hours? Did you really meet Richard 3 hours ago?"

"Yeah, you met Kyle about a week ago."

"Are you dating him?"

"Believe it or not, but I'm in love."

"In love with a man you met 3 hours ago."

"If you can find love, then I can find love."

"This isn't about finding love, this is about you putting a man in front of your family. Doesn't it bother you?"

"What?"

"Doesn't it bother you where he's sitting?"

"He's just sitting in a chair."

"Yeah, Dad's chair. That man is sitting in my father's chair! Out of all the guys you've been with, you've never let them sit in his chair. You've let one man that you met 3 hours ago sit in the chair that hasn't been touched nor sat in for 5 years."

"Your father is dead! He's never coming back!"

"What are you playing at, Mom?"

"There's no game."

"Then what is going on?"

"Nothing."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"Tell me."

"No."

"Tell me."

"Nothing is going on."

"Tell me!"

"Fine, you want to know? I'll tell you. I'm better than you. I'm able to get a boyfriend in 3 hours while you've never even kissed a guy."

"What?"

I had no idea what was going through my mom's head, but she lost a few screws up there.

"Are you...competing with me?"

My mom didn't say anything, she just crossed her arm and gave me the look.

"You are. You are! You're competing with your 17 year old daughter for what, getting a boyfriend the fastest?"

"When you hit your teen years, guys would be coming to our door asking you out. Then I had to stand there and watch my daughter get asked out and stay here with no one."

"Are you really that threatened by me? Are you threatened that you have the need to compete with a child? This is pathetic."

"Doesn't matter, I got a boyfriend and you don't."
