It had been a week since Violet's outburst. Everything seemed to be okay, pretty close to normal. Well, as normal as it could realistically be.
"Pip, can I show you what I have now? I'm fine, I promise I'm fine."
That word again. Fine. Violet was everything but fine and Pip could feel that. But she had been begging her for days, so she finally let her.
"The police emailed me a copy of the case."
"How-"
"Well, I've got my ways."
"Did you use an EPQ excuse?"
"Nope, I didn't even do an EPQ. After the trauma you had?. Nuh-uh."
"What did you do then?"
"Some acting course" she said and giggled "Back to the file now"
M. Fitz.
Went missing on December 3rd 2000 - estimated nighttime, found dead on December 5th 2000 in the morning.
He was missing for almost two days. What could have happened during these two days?
Cause of death: Car accident
Body found inside car, multiple skull damages, no signs of heart or organ failure.
"Wow, that's the smallest police file I've ever seen." Violet said.
"How many police files have you seen?"
"You don't want to know."
"Can I ask you something?"
"You're scaring me"
"According to what you said, Lilly was born in 2016. But you stated that you met Cara after I left for uni, which is around two years after 2016. Where were you these two years?"
"Oh, a Greek lady adopted me. Maria Karras. This also explains my European-Greek accent doesn't it?"
"Wait, Maria Karras as in Billy Karras's mother?"
"Yes"
"I contacted her when..."
"I know, the message was my idea. It was my only chance of contacting you but...you were...well... busy. When Billy was proven innocent, I knew it was time for me to go. I had already met Naomi and Cara and we were close, so it wasn't much of a change."
Details: the car itself was "stuck" on a tree, possibly causing the cranial damage. However, it was too big for such a small crash. He did not have a cell phone, but he had his wallet and ID with him, and that's how he was identified. Possible damage on the breaks, but that could have happened after the accident. In the car there was a wet plastic bag under the driver's seat.
"Shit." Violet said
"What?"
"I was right."
"What do you mean?"
"His car was 'stuck' on a tree. Let's say someone wanted to kill him. He didn't have his cell phone, but he did have his wallet with his credit card and ID. So it was not a robbery."
"Don't forget the skull damage. They said that with that hit it wasn't possible to have that much damage. What if someone else hit him to death and then faked the accident?" Pip said. The feeling came back, like a flashback, but she tried to ignore it.
"That's what I was thinking actually. He was killed by being hit in the head and then put into the car."
"But how did the car move if he wasn't alive?"
Violet squeezed her eyes trying to think.
"The plastic bag. They said that they found a wet plastic bag next to his feet and the heat was on. So I assume the killer put ice inside the bag so the gas pedal would be pushed by something a bit heavy and then the evidence would melt. It was the perfect crime."
"You're a genius, Vi. I can call you Vi, right?"
"Of course. There are still many questions though. Where is that man? Where is my mom?"
