She shattered. She was feeling happy because she realised he was thinking of her, just like she was thinking of him. Every day. No matter how long her exile was. She was still his Pip and he was still her Ravi. She was his sarge. They'd see each other, they'd finally be able to be together, after having to be separated for so long. Which meant everything went according to plan. Max would pay.
She was trying to remember the sound of his voice before, and he sounded exactly how she remembered. He mentioned the new cafeteria, which means he'd been searching the place there, he was still looking out for her.
The clock said 3.30. They'd see each other in less than two hours. Pip ran to her closet, took out a bunch of clothes, and put them in her bed. After saying no to ten shirts, she found THE shirt. The same white shirt with the words talk nerdy to me she was wearing when he came to her house for the first time, to apologise to her. That would do. And that black skirt next to it was the ideal match. She had so much to tell him, from how she was doing, to random facts she learned.
When the clock said 4.45, she started walking towards the cafeteria. It was like ten minutes away, but she had a feeling it would be good to be there a bit earlier. Well, the feeling was right, because Ravi was already there. She ran towards him and hugged him. That's all she ever wanted to do for almost two years now. She was with him, all the bad things in the world didn't matter because no matter what happened, how bad it was, they would always have each other.
"We're free, my sarge," he said, caressing her hair and her back. "You earned your life back. And look who's here too!" he added, pointing inside.
Pip looked inside and she saw that her boyfriend was pointing at a waitress. When she turned around, she saw her. So did the waitress.
"Why, hello, muchacha. Been a while, hasn't it?"
It was Cara. Her Cara, her home, not just her best friend, more like her sister. She ran towards her and hugged her. She had her two favourite people back. Her Ravi and her Cara. Her Cara and her Ravi. It was too good to be true.
They found a table next to the window and they sat there. Cara took a small break from work so she could sit there too. They talked about everything. Every little thing Pip had missed since she left Little Kilton or, as Ravi called it, Little Killton. She promised to come visit soon and this time she meant it.
Their chat was interrupted by a girl. She seemed like she was around 15 and she was nervous. It could be a fan of the podcast, Pip thought and she decided to talk first.
"Hey, how are you? I'm Pip Fitz-Amobi. What's your name?"
"Violet. Violet Fitz."
Ravi choked with his water. "Fitz?"
"Yeah, that's my mother's last name. Lilliana Fitz. Michael Fitz's sister."
It was Pip's turn to choke. It couldn't be. It couldn't be true.
"Michael Fitz was..."
"Your dad, I know. That makes us cousins."
"Is that why you're here? Where's your mom?"
"That's one of the reasons I'm here. Not only for my mom but also because it concerns you."
"What are you..?"
She was interrupted by Violet's phone.
"I'm sorry, I have to pick this up. Hello? Why, you are supposed to look after her until 6.30. Well, can you at least bring her here? Okay, see you at 20." She put her phone in her pocket. "So where were we?"
Pip and Ravi glanced at each other. They both had so many questions. Who was she? Where was her mother? What happened to Pip's dad? Who was she talking to and who would they bring there?
" What happened to your mom?" Cara asked and offered her a seat next to her. "I lost my mom when I was ten, so I will be able to understand your loss and how it's affecting you"
"I don't know what happened to her. When I was like six she just disappeared. All I know is that she was trying to find out what happened to Uncle Michael and then she disappeared."
"My dad died in a car accident when I was ten months old"
"So either December 2000 or January 2001."
"That's right. And who is that someone going to bring?"
"Don't judge me, okay?"
"Her daughter," Cara said.
" It's not what you think it is. I didn't want to have kids at that age, I didn't even have a boyfriend."
"Mommy!" A little girl ran to Violet.
"Hey, honey."
"Is that Auntie Pip? She's so pwetty"
"Yes, sweetheart."
"Can I hug her?" Pip asked and opened her arms so she could hug her niece. The kid went towards her and accepted the hug. Ravi was just absorbing Pip's happiness. Violet was trying to hold back her tears. Cara noticed and she hugged her, whispering "No one can see you now, let it all out. It will help."
"I'm okay, I promise. It's just that I'm so happy to see my daughter and Pip get along so well. Thanks for reaching out anyway"
"Why didn't you tell me about your mom?"
"I didn't want to make you feel bad. I knew you lost your mom so.."
"Wait, do you guys know each other?" Pip asked.
"Mommy and Cawa awe fwends' ' the little girl babbled. "She gives me hot chocolate and pictuwes to dwaw while mommy is studying"
"Studying?"
"Yeah, for school. I'm still going to school."
"But how..? I mean the kid..." Ravi said
"I go to school too. I'm in kindergarten!!!"
"I'll explain some other time, I promise. But it's way too complicated"
"Do you want me to explain it to them?"
"No, I will tell them when it's time."
"Tell us what?" Pip thought. How did she have a kid at such a young age? Why did she have a kid at such a young age? Where's her father? Where's her daughter's father? How does Violet know about her existence but she had no clue about hers? She had so many questions. She knew Cara would tell her if she asked her to but she didn't want to learn about it this way. She wanted to earn her trust.
"Vi helped me a lot when you weren't here. She helped me find a way to sleep on my own, and now I'm sleeping better."
"And what's that way?" Ravi asked. "I could use some advice."
Pip then realised he wasn't sleeping either. He had dark circles in his eyes. She hugged him and whispered "It's over now"
"She told me to think of you, Pip. Our happy memories. She helped me find a way to realise you still loved me and this helped me a lot. It was like watching a pleasant movie."
