Annabelle hated roatrips.
She liked the fact that she got to spend quality time with her mom after working for months straight without a break, but having to stay up with her mom for most of the ride was killer. Especially at 2am when all Annabelle wanted to do was sleep.
It was too dark to read a book and her laptop was safely pack away in the backseat under all the camping gear so she was forced to watch the trees they blended into a constant, almost pitch black blend outside the window.
Her mom had been talking about adding a new coffee roast to the menu while Annabelle was dozing off. She was almost asleep until she heard the words "your father."
That made her wake up immediately.
"What about him?" Annabelle asked, snapping her head towards her mom.
"I was just saying that he would like to stop by to see you." Her mom was slightly cautious, not truly knowing how to communicate this to her daughter.
"Oh..."
There was a still silence. Occasionally the sound of a passing truck broke it up, but there wasn't much else.
Suddenly, Annabelle's phone started ringing.
"Hello?"
"No... just like... to the right."
The noise was really distant from the phone, but Annabelle could hear it just enough.
"Luke?"
There were a couple of grunts in response.
"LUKE!" Annabelle yelled, startling her mother.
"Okay. I think that's good enough for tonight."
Annabelle listened to the rustling over the phone as she rode in the car. Her mother kept glanicing over at Annabelle, but didn't say anything.
"Luke I swear if I heard what I think I just heard..."
Annabelle was stopped before she could finish.
"Banana? When did you call me?"
"Luke, you called me. In the middle of your...activities."
There was a silence. Then Luke got it.
"OH! NO! That wasn't what you though it was."
Annabelle was skeptical.
"Really?"
"Yeah I was helping my friend's sister... Move furniture... She's in a new apartment..."
"Is that what they call it now?"
There was another silence. Suddenly a girl's voice was heard over the line and Annabelle felt even more uncomfortable. She couldn't hear what the girl was saying but she. Figured that she shouldn't be eavesdropping anyway.
"Hey I think I should go." Annabelle said, ready to hang up.
"It really was furniture. I can even send you before and after pictures."
"I think I'm okay." Annabelle said.
"Okay. Well just for future reference..."
There was a pause.
"If you were a couch, you'd be fine-ature."
