Annabelle hated the rain.
She appreciated the fact that it watered the grass and gave the world a refreshing sense of renewal afterwards, but it wasn't exactly the most delightful thing when she had to walk in it without an umbrella.
The walk from the bus station to her house was not a long trip, but it was long enough to completely drench her by the time she reached the stairs to get into her apartment.
She put down the groceries and took out her Sliver flip phone, pressing 2 on speed dial. Some days, she wished she could afford to buy a more updated phone, but she was just happy to have a phone, in general.
"I took down all the pictures of my friends today." She said as soon as Luke answered his phone.
"Why?"
"We're not friends anymore." She said, simply.
"Why not?"
"Different reasons."
"Is that a bad thing or a good thing?"
Annabelle was silent for a moment, thinking about his question.
"Neither." She finally said.
"What does that mean?" She heard Luke shuffling around in the background before hearing music.
"Are you listening to a stereo right now?" She asked. Technically, she was breaking her own rule, but it interested her to hear the familiar tune. She couldn't place the song, but she knew she had heard it before.
"Yeah. It's Real Friends."
She listened to the band a little longer, realizing how long it had been since she listened to that album.
"That's ironic." She said, drifting into her thoughts.
"So you were going to answer my question about what that means." Luke's voice broke her concentration, bringing her back to where she was standing in the kitchen.
"Oh. It means it's not a bad thing, but it's not a good thing. It's limbo." She started opening cabnets so she could put the groceries away.
"Oh. Did you hate them or something?"
"No. They just lost interest in me over time." She glanced at the floor, looking at her toes. Annabelle had a problem with looking at her toes a little too often.
"That sucks." The song was still playing in the background, although it was more or less coming to an end.
"It does indeed suck, my friend." She said, turning to put away a bottle of ketchup.
"So, we're friends now?" Luke sounded slightly perky all of a sudden. It wasn't enough to qualify a total change in mood, but it was enough for Annabelle to notice it.
"No. We're just us. Individual people who happen to converse occasionally." She opened a box of poptarts.
"Friends. We. are. friends. Cool. This means I can give you a nickname, right?" Luke chuckled.
"No. That means attatchment." She sighed.
"I'll call you..." Luke paused.
Annabelle braced for a bad pun.
"Banana. Because you appeal to me."
