Luke hated being awake in the middle of the night.
It was a different story if he had been awake already leading up to the point of the sun almost rising. But that was not the case this evening, causing at least a little malice.
He didn't bother to answer with a greeting because he knew it was going to be pointless in the end. He simply hummed the best he could of an "mhm."
"I got lost today." Annabelle's voice seemed louder than it actually was, mainly because Luke was attempting to wake up. Or not wake up, depending on how he looked at it.
"Well, it was more or less last night, considering that it's half 3 in the morning."
Luke noticed how perky her voice was and he wondered if she had been awake all night.
"I got antsy. I couldn't sleep. I did all my homework and then I had nothing to tire me out, so I went to the park and sat there for a while."
"Why the park?" He asked, placing the phone on the side of the face that was facing the ceiling. He balanced the phone to make sure it wouldn't fall of when he was responding.
"I like parks. Most parks are the same, wherever they are. All of them have the same concept, generally. They're all equally welcoming."
Luke listened to, what he assumed was, the crunch of leaves in the background of wherever she was. She was breathing more heavily than normal, which was only amplified because of the complete silence in Luke's room.
"Did I wake you up?" She asked Luke, who was drifting back into his unconciousness.
"Yeah." He managed to say, snapping back to their conversation.
"Do you want to go back to sleep? I can leave." She sounded slightly disappointed, but Luke didn't think to much of it.
"No, it's fine. I'll listen." He said, shifting to get comfortable in his bed.
"I crossed off a job from my 'things I want to be when I become a functioning adult' list."
"What job was it?" Luke always found it interesting when he listened to people talk about what they wanted to do as a job for a decent part of their lives.
"Marine Biologist."
"Why don't you want to do that?"
"Have you seen the size of whales? They're cute when they're babies but at a certain point, you have to say, 'oh fuck no.'"
This made Luke laugh.
"Oh and don't get me started on the flat ones like stingrays that hang out at the bottom of the ocean and they pop out and you like 'Surprise motherfucker.'"
Luke laughed very hard at this because he pictured a character from Spongebob popping out at Annabelle while she was exploring the sea floor. Well... His mental interpretation of Annabelle, anyway.
"Don't you want to discover Atlantis or something?" Luke asked.
"HA! No. There's a reason Spongebob hasn't been discovered yet." Annabelle said with a chuckle. Luke noticed that her laugh was very light and fairy-like. Kinda like tinkerbell in Peter Pan movies.
"Do you know why Squidward is so mad at Spongebob?"
He heard Annabelle sigh in the background.
"Because he soaks up all the attention."

I swear these puns get worse by the chapter. Does anyone else laugh at them besides me?
What are ya'll thinking so far? I just want to make sure you're at least semi-enjoying the book at this point.
Written while in line for coffee. ((It was a long line at school))
