The Silence

Annabelle hated getting to know people.

She liked people, just not the process of going from the awkward silences to getting really close to realizing that it wasn't going to last very long anyway while they left her life.

Her dad left. Her best friend left. Even her fish left her, for goodness sakes.

Her mom was the only thing that has stayed constant.

For this reason, Annabelle decided that it was best for her not to get to know Luke.

It was safer this way.

"Look. I don't really want to know you as a person." She said, over the phone.

"Okay. Well that's a way to say hello." She heard him chuckle.

"I just figured that I should get that out of the way now."

"So..." She heard silence over the phone.

"Don't do that." She didn't like the idea of total silence. It scared her, deep down.

"Sorry..." There was another silence.

"My dad left when I was 12." She said, getting the first thing off of her chest. She hadn't talked about that to anyone in years.

"I'm sorry." Luke said. Annabelle noticed he didn't say much. Which was great for her because that's what she needed. Someone to just listen.

"Don't be. He wasn't around much, anyway. Better this than leaving and coming."

"Did you want him to stay?" She was surprised that Luke managed to say this much.

"Yeah. He was a good guy, inside. He just didn't know how to show it." Annabelle stared at the wall in front of her, wondering where her dad was now. The same thing she did almost everyday since he left.

"Hello?" Luke's voice pulled her attention back to her current task.

"Sorry. I was thinking. What did you say?"

"I said I have a question before I have to go." Luke said quickly.

"Ask then." She wasn't really ready to leave but she didn't want to go through her whole life's story and grievances in the first phone call.

"Is this like a booty call for emotions?" Luke chuckled.

First interaction!

I figured out how I'm going to end the A.N.'s for this story. I'll just put where I wrote the story.

Comments are hella rad.

So the italicized words are the other person over the phone. Each chapter goes back and forth between Luke and Anna in 3rd person introspection and of course it starts with what they hate. ((J.I.C. anyone wanted to know the format.))

Written on my way to English class.
