I woke up feeling hazy with a horrible headache. But that wasn't the crazy part. I realised I wasn't in my own room. The room looked familiar, and I quickly checked on the covers. Thankfully, I still had my clothes on."Morning," Charles said handing me a disprin.
"Why am I in your room?" I asked, my voice groggy and confused. "What happened last night? Did we?"
"No, no nothing happened. You might have gotten a bit drunk." he said shrugging.
"A bit? I smell like I showered in alcohol." I said swinging my legs over the side of the bed.
"Look, I can't explain much. I have to go for practice. I was just waiting for you to wake up. I've called Mia. She'll be here soon. Breakfast is on the table. Help yourself to anything in the fridge" he explained standing up and heading towards the door.
I watched him go and manage to say, "Thanks"
Alone in his room, I took a moment to compose myself. I laid back down my mind, spinning.
Over the span of the next few days I consciously avoided Charles. I threw myself into other work, trying to distract myself from my feelings. I spent time with Logan went to the gym, helped me out with her new project but no matter how hard I tried to focus on other things, the thought of Charles kept coming back on my mind.
I still hadn't told Max about the incident with dad. I staying with Mia in her hotel room. I felt the weight of everything pressing on me. All I wanted was to return to New York and gain some of normalcy in my life. I couldn't shake the feeling that things were out of control.
The day before the race, I was out for breakfast with Penelope, Kelly's daughter. Spending time with her always made me forget about everything else. She was five and really cute. We were having the perfect girls day out, enjoying the sunshine and laughter.
"Can I ask you something?" She said as we sat outside a mall, her eyes serious.
"Of course, you can ,P," I replied, smiling at her.
"You can't tell anyone though," she insisted her voice dropping to a whisper.
"I promise I won't," I assure, laughing and leaning in closer.
"There is this boy in my class. I really like him." she said her face looking down at her hands.
"Oh, that's so sweet, whats his name" I said, feeling a bang of nostalgia for my own old school crushes.
"Liam"
"So have you told him yet?"
"No he's got a girlfriend, this other girl, Stacey"
"Really? he's got got a girlfriend?"
"Yeah, they sit together in lunch break and he shares his crayons with her"
"Oh, it's fine. You don't need him anyway." I added, trying to cheer her up.
She looked up at me, her eyes brightness slightly, "You really think so?"
"Absolutely," I nodded. "There are plenty of boys who would be lucky to have you, plus if he is with Stacy, he's not worth your time."
Penelope nodded slowly, "Yeah, it's really hard to see sit with her in class. Have you ever liked someone who is taken?"
I couldn't help, but think of Charles and the girl he had been with the ball. "Yeah, I know exactly what you mean." I admitted.
"Have you ever liked someone who liked someone else?" She asked her curiosity speech.
