Pain. Throbbing pain. It was all I could feel.I open my eyes slowly, the harsh white light of the room, blinding me for a moment. The ceiling was unfamiliar, as was the soft beeping sounds of machines around me. I felt the scratchy fabric of the hospital gown against my skin and the cool metal of my bed rails.
I looked around, trying to take in my surroundings. I was in a hospital.
Sterile white walls, the distant hump of hospital equipment, and the faint smell of anti septic. I noticed an IV drip attached to my arm and bandages covering various parts of my body.
I heard faint noises from outside the room.
"Can we see him?"
The voice was urgent and worried, and I recognised it immediately. Arthur.
I tried to piece together how I got here, but my mind was foggy, and my memories were blurred. Then it hit me like a sudden jolt of electricity through my body. I crashed didn't I?
The images of it all started to come back, speeding through Monaco, the screech of the tires, the impact. Panic surged through me as I struggled to get up in pain.
I wondered if she knew where I was.
Just then, the door to my room opened, and Arthur and Carlos walked in. Arther quickly rushed up to my side, seeing me, struggling to sit up. "Easy there," he said supporting my back with his hand.
"Hey there, how are you feeling?" Carlos asked his voice gender, but failed with concern.
"I'm alright," I replied, but the pain in my body told a different story.
Carlos stood at the foot of the bed, his arms crossed his face, a mix of relief and worry, "You gave us quite a scared there. "
I tried to smile, but it felt weak. "How bad is it?"
Arthur glanced at Carlos before answering. "You banged up pretty bad, but the doctors say you're gonna be okay. You just need some rest and heal. The seatbelt caused the most damage somehow." He said pointing to tye left side of my stomach that was covered with a big white patch of bandages.
I moved my hand around the area and winced in pain as soon as I touched the main wound. The seatbelt had dug in, leaving a bad wound.
Carlos added, "And you've got some broken ribs, a concussion, and some nasty bruises, but nothing that won't heal with time. So dont worry you'll be back after a couple of races." He said this knowing that the top thing in my mimd right now was whether i'd be able to drive again or not.
I nodded and a feeling of relief washed over me. The pain was intense, but hearing that I was going to recover, was reassuring.
Just then, the one person I wanted to see walked in. Jules. She walked in the streaming down her face. Somehow, watching her cry, hurt more than the bruises on my body.
Carlos and Arthur exchanged glances , "We'll give you two a moment" Arthur said, as they softly closed the door behind them.
Jules stood at the foot of her bed, her shoulders shaking with silence sobs. I mustered all the strength I had and reached out to her, "Jules," I whispered.
She came closer, her eyes locking into mine. "Charles, I'm so sorry. I never should've let you go."
"Shh hey," I am reaching up to why her tears away, " it's okay."
