There was a pause before she responded, her voice small and thick.

Yeah...we are.

I let out a deep sigh, laying back on the bed and staring up at the ceiling.

What do we do now?

Jane's voice in my head was silent for a moment, and I could practically feel her thinking.

We need to explore. Figure out where we are, what we can do...

I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath.

Sounds easier said than done.

Jane chuckled dryly.

When has anything in our lives been easy?

I rolled my eyes at her remark, a half-smile playing on my lips despite the situation.

I sat up, pushing myself off the bed.

Okay. Exploration it is. But first, we need to find out more about humans. What's different here, what rules we need to follow, where we can safely stay.

There was a beat of silence before Jane spoke up again.

Right. Information could save us.

I walked over to the window again, looking out at the human world.

Question is, how do we get that information?

I rested my forehead against the cold glass, racking my brain for a solution.

Talking to people might be the best way. But how do we even approach them? We look like we've just escaped from a mental asylum, for crying out loud!

Jane spoke up, her tone slightly sarcastic.

Why not...that hot shot?

I raised an eyebrow, caught off guard by her suggestion.

The hot shot? What are you talking about?

Jane chuckled, and I could almost picture her rolling her eyes.

I mean the grumpy guy. The one we just met. He's...interesting.

I crossed my arms, a sceptical look on my face.

Interesting? More like grouchy and antisocial.

Jane snickered.

Yeah, but he's the only person we know in this new world. Plus, he seems like he could handle the unexpected.

I rolled my eyes, not entirely convinced.

"Handle the unexpected"? You make him sound like some kind of superhero.

Jane laughs again, clearly entertained by the idea.

Well, maybe not a superhero, but at least someone who won't run away screaming when they see us.

I let out a sigh, knowing she had a point.

Okay, fine. He might be our best option right now. But why are you so interested in him all of a sudden?

She paused before answering.

I'm not sure. He just...seems like he's hiding something.

I rolled my eyes again.

Or maybe you just have a thing for grumpy, mysterious men.

Jane chuckled, not denying my accusation.
