Lily POV:

The weather has begun to warm up and it is a lot less miserable outside. I have been spending more time outside and i am enjoying the April flowers. Alice is now dating Frank, which gets annoying at times when I can't hang out with her. So i have been spending most of my free time with Severus.

"Hey Lily," Severus says quietly. "I wonder what the exams are going to be like?" he asks me.

"I don't know, personally, I am hoping that they are just written tests and that we won't have to practice any spells or stuff like that.'' To be honest, I was quite nervous, maybe even more nervous than before. "You know, I really am quite nervous." i admit.

"What do you have to be nervous about?"

"These exams are really important. What happens if i fail a-"

"Lily, You have nothing to worry about, you're the brightest witch of our age. You have good grades in all of your classes. As long as something happens and you physically can't take the test, you will do brilliantly!" Severus interrupts quickly and enthusiastically. I look at him with a smile and for some reason, he turns away.

"Thanks Severus, I feel a lot better." I say, trying to kill the tension. He smiles and opens his mouth to say something but is interrupted by another voice.

"What are you doing still hanging around this freak!?" the voice teases loudly. We turn our heads in unison to see a Slytherin boy strutting towards us.

"Hi Yaxley," Severus says shyly.

"You know this boy?" I ask quietly, and he nods in return.

"I thought that you knew better than to hang around mudbloods like her!" the boy named Yaxley shouts arrogantly.

"Did he just call me a mudblood?" I ask myself.

"Leave her alone Yaxley.'' Severus says quietly, almost like he didn't want to say it out loud.

"Why? I thought I told you that mudbloods need to be put in their place! She and her lot don't belong here, remember!" Yaxley shouts while completely ignoring that I was there. My heart began to beat rapidly and I could feel tears burning in my eyes. I open my mouth to say something but before I can say anything I am interrupted.

" Shut up mudblood! I don't want to hear anything that you have to say!" Yaxley turns and shouts at me. "You don't belong here, understand! If my father was headmaster, the whole lot of you would be expelled! You are just a freak who robbed magic from someone else! You are a mudblood!" I sit there and glare at him with tears threatening to spill over.

"Alright, that's enough." Severus speaks up, but still not terribly loudly.

"Aww, is Severus going to defend the little mudblood?" Yaxley teases.

"She hasn't done anything to you, just leave her alone." Severus begs. Although I was grateful for his defence, I couldn't stay there any more, I had to escape.

"I have to go." I turn and say to him quietly, and then I jump up and run away as fast as I can. I ran to go find Alice or Remus, heck I would even talk to Potter if it meant that I could escape the emotions that I was now feeling.

Severus POV:

"Ha! Look at her run away! She can't even stand up for herself!" Yaxley mocks Lily as she runs away. I really did feel bad for her, but I couldn't comfort her, not in front of Yaxley.

"Do you have to pick on her?" I ask quietly.

"What? You don't believe that she is a mudblood? She is a freak! She doesn't belong here, and whether you say it out loud or not, deep down, you believe the same thing." Yaxley counters sharply.

"She isn't a freak!" I raise my voice slightly.

"But you didn't deny that she is a mudblood." Yaxley says smoothly. My heart sank a little bit, Yaxley was right, I didn't deny it. Maybe my views do align more with his than I thought.

"Well, she, isn't." I say slowly.

"Just say it! Say she is a mudblood!" I shake my head, I refuse. "Oh, I see you're a COWARD!" Yaxley antagonizes. I can handle being yelled at, mocked by Potter, maybe even hit, but I cannot stand being called a coward.

"ALRIGHT, FINE SHE IS A MUDBLOOD! THERE, I SAID IT, HAPPY!!" I shout back quickly, then I freeze as I realize what I had just said. I just called Lily Evans a mudblood.

"There is a good boy." Yaxley says proudly. I feel my inside twist in regret, but I couldn't show it so I decided to suppress it. "Come on, Snape, let's go hang out with Avery and Dolohov." he invites me as he turns to walk in the opposite direction, and i follow behind him quickly.

Lily POV:

I am crying and running, I don't know where I am running to, all I care about is that I was going in the opposite direction of Yaxley. "Why do people have to be so mean? Why can't people just leave me alone?" I ask myself as I run. Suddenly, I ran into someone. I must have surprised them because they let out a small gasp.

"Good afternoon Evans!" James greets me cheerfully, he must not have noticed me crying at first. But then his tone suddenly changes from happy to concerned. "Hey, Evans, what the matter?" he asks gently, as he crouches down to my level. I don't look at him, instead I just keep crying as I look at the floor.

"I can't help you if you don't talk to me.'' He speaks in a tender voice that I have never heard him speak before. Finally, I decided that I could talk to him.

"Y-Yaxley-c-called-me-a-m-mudblood!?" I say through my sobs. James's face melts into one of anger, sadness and disgust all at once.

"Where is he? I'm gonna kill him!"James says angrily as he stands up and takes out his wand, but I stop him.

"No, no, don't, it's okay." I say quickly as I wipe away my tears in vain.

"NO! It's not okay, he can't call you things like that!" James raises his voice slightly.

"He can if it's the truth." I say sadly and through more sobs. James looks at me with shock.

"Hey, you're not a mudblood, okay!?" he says as he grabs my shoulders and looks at me in the face. I avoid his gaze and look at the floor. "You stay here, I'm gonna go and give Yaxley a piece of my mind." he says as he rushes off without giving me a chance to stop him.

I don't listen to him and I don't stay put. I leave to go find Alice, she always knows how to make me feel better. So I begin to run through the hallways again, but this time I don't run into anyone until I finally find Alice in the library reading with Frank. Alice quickly stands up and gives me a hug.

"What happened?" she asks gently. I cry in her arms for a few minutes before I can speak.

"Yaxley called me a mudblood." I said quietly so that only she and Frank could hear. Alice hugs me tighter.

"Oh, Lily. That's not fair. You know that he is just a bully. You are not a mudblood, you are the kindest, smartest, most brilliant witch that I have ever met." she says softly. This continues for nearly a half an hour of me crying and Alice hugging me and giving me words of encouragement, until I finally stop crying.

"Now, don't you ever believe a word he says, you hear me." Alice commands me boldly. Frank had left to get me a drink of water and now he has returned with a glass. Ha hands it to me and I accept it gratefully.

"Would you like to hang out with us?" Frank offers warmly. I nod my head.

"Thank you." I tell him with a slight smile.

"Anytime." Frank says with a smile.

"Come on, let's go to the Gryffindor common room, Yaxley can't bother you in there, and we can play a game." Alice says as she walks me towards the hallway.
