Lily POV:

I take a few sips of my water as I watch everyone dance. I am so distracted that I don't even notice James walking up behind me.

"Hi Lily," he says shyly as he taps me on the shoulder. I spin around quickly and I see him messing with his hair nervously.

"Hello James," I greet him kindly. He looks down at his feet and then at me, still messing with his hair.

"Lily, I was wondering," he says before pausing. I have never seen him this nervous and i felt slightly bad for him " i was wondering.. If..you would like to dance with me." he says nervously, looking at the ground again. My heart drops, I don't know what to say. He has asked me out all of the time during school, and I was used to it. Why was I so surprised this time? Maybe it was because I have never been asked to dance before. Maybe it was because I don't know how to dance and I am scared about messing up in front of people. Maybe it was all of the above, but I hesitated long enough that James began to squirm uncomfortably.

"Just as friends," he says quickly. Again, my heart leaps. This is what I wanted right? To be friends instead of enemies. If dancing together is what friends do then what was the harm in saying yes. I look at him and smile.

"Yes, I would love to dance as friends." I say calmly. His face lights up into a bright smile that I have never seen before.

"Really?" he asks in disbelief. I raise my eyebrow.

"Do you not consider us friends?" I tease. He laughs and shakes his head.

"No, I do, it's just that, I didn't think that you did." he replies slowly.

"Well of course i consider us friends, how can i spend a whole week with you and not consider you a friend?" I say gently. He laughs again and smiles.

"I guess we are friends then." he declares. "Shall we dance to make it official?" he asks as he holds his hand out. I smile and pause to look at his hand, it was smooth and steady, confident and strong. "Why am I looking at his hand?" I ask myself as I lift my head up to look at his face. I take his hand in mine as I smile.

"Of course." I say and James smiles as he guides me to the dance floor. My heart rate rises as I walk. He stops and turns to face me, he takes my right hand in his left and rests his left hand on my waist. Butterflies erupt in my stomach and I feel very nervous. I rest my left hand on his shoulder and we start to dance. Because I have never danced before, I do poorly and I step on his feet a lot.

"Sorry," I apologize and blush in embarrassment. "I am awful at this. I have never danced before."

"That's okay," James says warmly with a smile. "Would you like me to teach you?" He offers kindly.

"Yes." I say politely. James smiles and he stops to teach me the steps. After a few minutes of practicing, I manage to do it right and I gain some confidence. I smile at my accomplishment and we dance gracefully across the floor.

"There you go," James says proudly. "I knew that you could figure it out. You're a smart girl." he compliments. I smile and look into his eyes, they are beautiful and kind. a crystal blue color that pierces into my soul. It feels like he could read my mind.

"Lily, Frank and I are going to go get some desserts. Would you like to come along?" Alice interrupts loudly and obliviously. I lower my gaze and he looks away awkwardly. We let go and put our arms down. James messes with his hair and looks at the floor sheepishly.

"No thanks Alice," I said quietly. "You and Frank have fun."

"Okay, see you later then." Alice says sweetly, then she and Frank leave the party to go find some dessert.
