"Mom and I were going through a couple of boxes we never got around to unpacking and found this a few weeks ago," she sighed, giving me a small smile. "Creepy timing."
She put the tape in the player and we all gathered around the television. I glanced behind me to see Billy and Stu sneak into the back of the room.
"Told you I'd make a movie someday, huh?" I gasped, my head snapping over when the tape started and I heard the voice ring out into the room.
Tears sprang to my eyes as I saw Randy sitting on his bed in his dorm room, looking directly into the camera. "Oh my God," Gale gasped, she and Dewey looking at each other and me in surprise.
"If you're watching this tape, it means as I feared, I did not survive these killings here at Windsor College. And breaking the rules finally caught up to me. Hazel, don't worry, no regrets here, believe me." He winked.
I shook my head with a small laugh.
"Anyway, the reason I am here is to help you, so that my death will not be in vain. That my life's work will help save some other poor soul from getting mutilated. If this killer does come back, and he's for real, there are a few things that you gotta remember. Is this simply another sequel? Well, if it is, the same rules apply. But here's the critical thing. If you find yourself dealing with an unexpected backstory and a preponderance of exposition, then the sequel rules do not apply. Because you are not dealing with a sequel, you are dealing with the concluding chapter of a trilogy."
"A trilogy?" Dewey asked.
Randy nodded like he could hear him. "That's right. It's a rarity in the horror field, but it does exist, and it's a force to be reckoned with because true trilogies are all about going back to the beginning and discovering something that wasn't true from the get-go." My mind went to the boys saying they have a partner, and the photos of Maureen and this new killer claiming to be the one who murdered Maureen. "Godfather, and Jedi, both revealed something that we thought was true, wasn't true. So if it is a trilogy you are dealing with, here are some super trilogy rules. One, you got a killer who's gonna be superhuman. Stabbing him won't work, shooting him won't work, basically in the third one, you gotta cryogenically freeze his head, decapitate him, or blow him up."
I looked to Mark who stood beside me. He nodded, letting me know we were both thinking back to our conversation last night.
"Number two; anyone, including the main character, can die." He gave the camera a sad look, "That means you, Haze. God, I hope I'm wrong. But it's the final chapter, it could be fuckin' Reservoir Dogs by the time this thing is through." He shook his head before continuing. "Number three; the past will come back to bite you in the ass! Whatever you think you know about the past, forget it. The past is not at rest, any sins you think were committed in the past are about to break out and destroy you."
I had to stop myself from turning back to look at Billy and Stu, wanting to talk to them about the new photo. I need to know what they are hiding from me.
"Hazel, I hope I'm wrong about this, I hope you never need to see this. I love you, Haze, more than anything and I am so sorry if you're watching this. You are my moon and all the stars." He gulped, running his hand down his face before shaking his head. "So, in closing, let me say good luck to you all, GodSpeed, and for some of you, I'll see you soon, cause the rules say, some of you ain't gonna make it. I didn't, not if you're watching this tape."
I held back a sob, my heart breaking from his words. But then my eyes widened when the door behind him opened.
Mickey and I walked in. Randy jumped up, coming over and grabbing my waist, "Hey baby," he said, connecting our lips.
I brought my shaking hand to my mouth as I saw us looking at each other with smiles, both so happy and in love.
"How's Martha?" I asked.
He looked away, towards the camera and it clicked that he wasn't talking to her that day, he was making this video. "She's good," he said as he grabbed the camera.
I came closer, and Mickey came up behind me and looked completely normal. No clues to show he is a murderer. "What's that for?" he asked.
"Uh, nothing, just leaving my legacy," Randy chuckled as the camera turned off. I remember him saying that, how I was confused and Mickey and I teased him about it. I never thought this was what he meant.
Martha got up, switching the TV off and everyone was quiet for a moment before I looked up at her, tears still slowly going down my cheeks. "Uhm, Martha, could I keep that?" I asked and she nodded, handing it over to me.
Mark set his hand on my shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze. I set my hand on his as a thank you, watching as Dewey, Gale, and Martha walked out of the tent.
I just looked down at the tape in my hands. "He made that the day before," I said.
"Before he-?" Mark stopped, not sure if he should say.
"Was murdered," I said. "Mickey was his roommate, he was our friend. We sat in their room that night watching movies, laughing. And then the next day, he murdered Randy. He didn't even care. He enjoyed killing the most important person in my life, and he did it all because I didn't want to be with him."
Mark sighed, "I'm sorry Hazel."
I shook my head, wiping my eyes. "It's done and we have a new threat to deal with now."
He gave me a look. "It's going to be okay. I'm not going to let anything happen to you, or your friends. We will get this guy."
I gulped, hoping the boys weren't in here. "I hope you're right."
"Haze, Gale and I are heading to the archives, do you want to come with us?" Dewey asked when he poked his head in.
I shook my head, standing up in time to see the boys slip out the back. "No, I'm going to run to the bathroom. I just need a minute."
Mark and I walked out and I slipped the tape into my bag. I looked up to meet Martha's gaze, "Do you have a place to stay? How long are you here?"
"I only came to give you the tape, I've got to start heading home," she said and I nodded. I then pulled her into a hug. "He's here with you, you know?" she whispered.
"I know," I said back, grateful for her words.
"I'll escort you back to your car," Mark said and she nodded.
They started walking away and Gale gave Dewey a look. "Haze, you sure you don't want to come with us?" Dewey asked.
I crossed my arms, shaking my head. "No, I just need a minute alone. We'll meet up later."
He looked hesitant until Gale grabbed his arm, pulling him away with her.
