Not too long after the police and medics arrived. They rushed Mark to the hospital and then Dewey, Gale, and I went as well, none of us with particularly life-threatening injuries.
Once there, they checked me over, fixing up any cuts I had gained from the fight. A few ribs were broken, and I have a concussion and a broken nose. But other than that I made it out with only some minor cuts and bruises.
Wallace came in wanting to get my statement. I told him about the phone call and taking the car and guns. What happened when I got there, Mark coming in, running, and finding Milton. The secret room and the things Roman admitted to. I made sure to say that he manipulated Billy and Stu and that he was planning on pinning it all on them, both of them being taped up, beaten, and bloody. I explained how I attacked Roman and then Dewey shooting that final shot.
He asked about the boys, what happened, and where they went. I said that they made sure I was okay and then they left, not telling me where they were headed.
He let me go and I went to the front desk, asking about Mark. She let me know he was finishing up surgery and would be able to be seen in a couple of hours.
Dewey and Gale made it out with pretty minor injuries this time as well, the three of us gathering in the waiting room. "Wow, first time none of us are stuck in a hospital bed after all this," Dewey said.
"Mark is though," I pointed out.
"He's going to be okay, he's tough." I nodded, staring across the room.
"So, it was Roman," Gale said, still in shock. I nodded again. "And he was Sidney's brother?"
"Yep." I sighed, running my hand down my face. "All of this started because of him."
"Wow," Dewey mumbled, all of us definitely thinking about the things that have happened over the past five years. "I'm glad it's over. They'll find those two bozos and then it'll all be behind us."
I gulped, looking down at my fingers. "Yeah."
"Hey, Haze, I know you...have feelings for them, but they need to be caught. They need to be reprimanded and serve time for what they did."
"I know," I breathed, hating that he was right. And that I am lying and hiding them at my house.
We were all quiet for a while after that, and soon, Mark was awake. We all went inside, and he smiled a little seeing us. He had a bandage on his head, and his arm in a sling. He probably has a large bandage on his side under the hospital gown as well. "I'm glad to see you're all okay," he said.
"You too," Gale told him.
I felt tears flood my vision and I looked down, guilt coming onto me in waves as I looked at how hurt he was. "Can you give Hazel and me a moment?" Mark asked, causing me to look at him in surprise.
Once Dewey and Gale had left, shutting the door behind them, he smiled at me again. "Hey, take a seat," he nodded his head to the side of his bed and I sat down, scooting the chair close.
"I'm so sorry," I said after a moment, a tear finally escaping my eyes.
"What are you sorry about? You didn't do this to me. Although, you did have a gun pointed at me," he chuckled.
I smiled a little at that before it turned into a frown once again. "You almost died, Mark."
"But I didn't."
"But you could have."
He chuckled, shaking his head. "I swore to protect you. That's what I was doing." He frowned then, a sadness coming over his face. "When he took my gun and I heard that shot," he took a shaky breath, "I looked over, and I felt like the entire world stopped. I was so afraid I had failed you. That I lost you."
I furrowed my brows trying to fight the feelings that were welling up inside me at his words. I love Billy and Stu. I'm going home to them. I'm leaving with them. I can't be falling for Mark, I just can't.
"I was worried I lost you too," I finally admitted, feeling as if I was completely exposed, my eyes burning with unshed tears.
His own filled with emotion and he smiled a little. "You were pretty badass though. I mean, an ice pick," he laughed, shaking his head.
"Basic instinct," I shrugged, smirking a little to myself as I thought of Tatum and Randy. I then grabbed his hand gently, smiling at him again. "I'm so glad you're okay."
"Me too," he agreed, both of us laughing a bit. "Now that this is all over, I can finally ask you out on a real date."
My eyes widened, "O-oh, uhm," I stuttered, not sure what to say. I want to say yes, but then I remember my boys waiting for me and all they have been through and done just for me. To be with me.
He sighed, "I saw them there," he said.
"Who?" I asked.
"Billy and Stu. They were tied up, they looked just as devastated as me when he shot you."
I nodded, "Yeah."
"I know you love them. But, what are you going to do when they get caught?"
"They ran after you went unconscious before the police arrived. I don't know where they went. Roman got Stu in the side, just like you. I don't know if he's even alive, or if I'll ever see them again."
He gave my hand a squeeze. "I think we both know where they are."
I looked up at him, trying to keep my face even. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"I know you've been hiding something, and I think it was them."
I narrowed my eyes, feeling myself close off again and get defensive. "I wasn't hiding them."
"You knew they were here though? And you didn't tell anyone."
I pursed my lips, annoyed. "Yes, I knew they were here. They called me, but they weren't the ones killing people. It was Roman. If I was hiding them and helping them, don't you think I would have known it was Roman?"
He sighed, shaking his head, "I'm sorry. I don't want to argue with you. I shouldn't have accused you of anything."
I felt a pit in my stomach at his words. He's apologizing when I should be. I'm lying through my teeth to not only him, and the rest of the police, but Dewey too.
"But, if I am right, you need to be careful. If you leave with them and get caught, they're not the only ones going to jail, as you would now be an accomplice."
"I know." I let go of his hand, standing up. "I'm going to let you get some rest and head home. I'm starving," I tried to joke.
He gave me a half smile, seeming to see right through me. "Be careful. And think about that date."
I walked backward with a real smile coming onto my lips. "Hmm. Thought about it."
"And?" he asked.
"You'll get your answer when you're out of here, Detective."
He chuckled, shaking his head as I walked out, passing Gale and Dewey on the way. "Where are you going?" Dewey asked.
"Home. I'll call you later."
