"Roman?" I breathed, shaking my head.
"She slammed the door in my face. Said I was Rina's child and Rina was dead. And it struck me, what a good idea! So I watched her, made a little home movie, a family film. Seems Maureen, mom, she really got around. I mean, Cotton was one thing, everybody knew about that," he tilted his head to the screen, my eyes going back to it to see footage of Maureen kissing Cotton as he got into a car outside her house. Then it changed to show Hank Loomis meeting her at a motel. "But Billy's father, that was the key. You see, watching Maureen, I also watched my dear sister, and hatred grew. But I got to know her friends. And her boyfriend was just the guy I needed." The video went to Sidney, Billy, Stu, Tatum, and Randy hanging out together, before I moved to town. "He didn't like seeing his daddy in my movie too much, didn't like it at all. And once I supplied the motivation, all the kid needed was a few pointers. Have a partner to sell out in case you get caught, find someone to frame, it was like he was making a movie!"
"This all is because of you," I growled, my heart breaking seeing Sid, Tate, and Randy up there smiling and laughing.
"I'm a director, Hazel. It's what I do," he laughed. "Now, I had no real idea they would make a film of their own. And what a film it turned out to be, huh?"
I shook my head, still confused about one part. "Where do I fit into all of this? Why are you going after me?"
He sighed, looking at me like he did in his office the other day. "You see, watching perfect Sidney and her group of friends, I started to despise them. Billy and Stu ended up getting on my good side once they proved themselves with my dear old mom, but the rest of them were as pathetic as her." I dug my nails into my fist, anger building up the more he spoke. "But then you showed up." I felt my eyebrows shoot up, surprised to hear that. "Everything changed when you came along."
The screen showed me with the group now, or just with Sidney. Then more of just me. "What are you talking about? How did things change?"
"I didn't care what happened to any of them. I, of course, mentioned that it would be great to get rid of my sister and her friends, but that was before you."
I gulped as he came closer to me, only a couple of feet away. "I stuck around, making sure things were still going smoothly, and I wouldn't be backstabbed. And watching you. After their first kill, when you were there, I had to intervene, make sure you wouldn't be harmed. Of course, I wasn't ecstatic when I learned they were just as obsessed as me, an entire plan to pick them all off one by one, just to be with you."
I thought back to the night at the party when I found out about everything. How could they have kept Roman from me? "So, I let them do their thing. But, they screwed up and came running to me with their tails between their legs. I helped them out and then we found you at school. You know how that ended, and then, they lost you once again. So I took matters into my own hands. They stayed in the shadows and I got to be the one to see you every day. Have class with you."
I remembered back to the photo in his office, how he was looking at me. "When you turned down the Stab 3 script, I knew I had to do something to get you close once again. So Cotton had to go. Had to do something big to get attention."
"Just like the movie," I mumbled. "You wanted them to have a mentor."
He nodded, smiling. "And a director."
I took a shaky breath looking around. "So what now? You three are going to share me? I'm sorry, but that's not happening." I shook my head, hoping the boys would pop out soon.
He chuckled darkly, backing up and going to another door, pulling out Billy and Stu who had their hands, ankles, and mouths duct-taped. I gasped, taking a step closer to them. Billy was glaring at Roman and Stu was looking at me worriedly. That's when I noticed how tired they both looked and the blood coming from Stu's side.
"They're finally going to be caught, and then you and I will get to be together," Roman said with a sadistic smile on his face.
"Like hell," I laughed, shaking my head. I grabbed a heavy ashtray off the table beside me, holding it behind me.
He growled, narrowing his eyes at me, stepping around the boys who were yelling into their taped mouths. I thought I heard faint banging, but then my attention was back on Roman as he got closer. "You love them, why not me? I made them!"
I took a step closer to him. "You made nothing. Your movies are shit and so are your scripts! That's why you needed me! That's why their movie became something while yours faded away. No one cared about the murdered housewife once all the teens started being slaughtered. You're just jealous they have more game than you, in more ways than one."
"Shut the fuck up!" he screamed, getting even closer, his eyes wide.
"Fuck you!" I yelled, swinging the ashtray at him just as he lunged at me, hitting him in the head and he fell. I tried to hit him with it again but he grabbed it trying to pull me closer to him. I let go, running away. He tackled me to the ground and I reached over grabbing a vase and smashing it onto his head. I was able to get up and throw the small table the vase was on at him.
I tried to run again but he grabbed my ankle, pulling me back down. He punched me, my head going to the side. I got a hit in on him and was able to get up. He swung at me again but I ducked, just for him to come back around and backhand me. It made me stumble, giving him a chance to grab me by the hair, slamming my head onto the bar.
I gasped in pain, my eyes widening when his knife came down right beside my face. I could hear the boys freaking out and just hoped they could get themselves out to help me in some way. I reached around me, finding a glass and reaching back, breaking it against his face.
He moved back, falling down again. I picked up one of the stools, throwing it at him but he kicked at my legs, making me fall again. "Hazel!" I heard Dewey faintly, along with the banging.
Roman stood over me, bringing his leg back and kicking me in the shoulder. Then kicking me in the stomach again and again.
He pulled me up by my hair, gripping my throat. "You will love me," he growled, his teeth bared and his eyes crazy.
"Ne-never," I gasped out, scratching and pulling at his hands. Just when I thought I'd lose consciousness, the lights went out. His grip slacked, letting me gasp for breath as he was confused.
There was a knock on the door Roman came through, "Haze? Hazel?" I heard and my eyes widened.
The door knob jiggled and Roman dropped me rushing out of view. The door opened and a gun came through first and then, Mark. "Hazel? Where is he?"
Just then, the lights came back on and Roman jumped out from behind the door, punching him in the nose and then knocking him to the ground. Mark didn't move and it was then I noticed his blood-soaked shirt. Fuck, Roman must have stabbed him earlier and I never noticed.
I looked over, seeing Roman's knife sitting on the bar. I grabbed it, readying myself as I watched him bend down beside Mark. "Hey! Leave him alone!" I yelled. He paused, looking up at me. "Lose something?" I asked, holding up the knife.
"Found something," he smirked, raising Mark's gun to be pointed at me. "You don't want to be with me. Then you won't be with anyone." With that, he fired the gun. I fell back with a scream at the impact.
