*three years ago*
Luke didn't know why his mom was crying, or why she had taken him out of his crib in the middle of the night, or why Ashton and his family were over.
She set him on her hip and carried him downstairs, where everyone was gathered.
"Asheh?" Luke yawned, rubbing his eye.
"Lu!" Ashton shreiked with a smile.
Mr. Irwin and Mr. Hemmings stood by the door, their bags packed.
"Daddy!" Luke giggled, reaching his tiny hands out for him.
His dad smiled and took his baby into his arms. "Hey there buddy, you tired?"
Luke nodded and yawned again, curling into his dad's chest. "Go sleep now, goo' night."
"Hold a second Luke, don't go to bed yet." Mrs. Hemming wiped her eyes. "Daddy has to tell you something first."
Ashton ran in front of his dad and reached his arms up. "Carry me!"
Mr. Irwin obliged and set Ashton on his hip. "I love you more than anything, you know that right, sport?"
Ashton giggled and played with his dads hat. It was green camouflage.
"Yas daddy, Ashy luvoo you too! Ashy always lob him daddy and mommy!"
He kissed Ashton's cheek. "Well, daddy needs to go away with Luke's dad for a bit. We'll both come back soon though, safe and sound. But while I'm gone, you gotta be the man of the house for me, and watch over your mother while I'm gone. Can you do that, sport?"
Ashton nodded seriously. "Will always take care of mommy. But where daddy gunna go?"
"We're gunna go all over the world." Luke's dad said. He kissed Luke back awake. "Okay bud? We need to help our country in this time of need, but we'll be back as soon as we can. I promise."
"Okay." Luke whispered.
Mr. Irwin set Ashton down and stood up straight. He saluted Ashton, and the little boy immediately copied the movement, giggling slightly.
Mrs. Irwin smiled through her tears and handed each boy a little Australian flag. "Here you are." She kissed her husbands cheek. "I love you."
"I love you most." He whispered back and hugged her tightly.
Mr. Hemmings sat Luke down, and the baby nommed on his flag, watching as his mommy and daddy kissed.
"Say goodbye to daddy now, boys." Mrs. Hemmings said, wiping her tears.
"Buh bye!" Luke shouted, waving both his hands spaztically.
"Bye daddy!" Ashton wrapped his hands around his dads legs. "See soon?"
"Yes, I'll see you soon, sport." His dad ruffled Ashton's hair and picked up the bags. "Our flight leaves in two hours, we better get going."
"Right." Mr. Hemmings gave his wife and Luke one last hug and kiss, before following Mr. Irwin out the door, to the taxi.
Ashton and Luke watched them go, waving their hands and their flags goodbye, until the taxi went out of sight.
