School Play

Ashton: 6

Luke: 5  (their ages dont really match up with their vocabulary.)

Luke and Ashton are in the school play together.

But when it's show night, Luke gets stage fright.

"Looky Lu! Ashy got part!" Ashton said, running up to Luke. "Am a patient!"

"Am a doctor!" Luke giggled, showing Ashton his script.

Luke didn't fully understand what the play was about, but he knew that he was a doctor, and doctors save lives.

"Okay kiddos, up onto the stage so we can rehearse the first scene." The teacher said and they climbed onto the large stage.

"Ashy! Ashy help Lu!" Luke huffed, trying to climb onto the high stage.

He reached his hands up and Ashton took them, helping him onto the stage.

"Thank." Luke giggled before running to his spot in the back of the stage.

He was told all he had to do was check his patients heart with his toy stethoscope when his part came, and Ashton was his patient.

Ashton stood beside him and giggled when Luke pressed the circular part of the toy to his chest. "Brr Lu! It cold."

"Sorry." Luke shrugged off his little hoodie and pulled it over Ashton's shoulders. "Warmer?"

"Yas, thanks Lu." Ashton rubbed his cheek against the hood of the sweatshirt.

Luke stuck the circular part against Ashton's forehead and they both burst out laughing.

"Quiet back there!" The teacher yelled and Ashton gasped and hid behind Luke.

"Okay kids, the grand opening is tonight, so this is our last time to rehearse, so, Harry stop kissing Louis, lets take this from the top!"

Music started playing and Ashton and Luke giggled and played with the nearby props until it was their turn.

A spotlight shone on them, and that was how Luke knew it was his cue to do his part. He grabbed the stethoscope and pressed it against Ashton's chest.

"He's healthy!" He announced and the spotlight moved on to the next doctor and patient.

"Good job Lu." Ashton whispered.

Luke beamed. "Lukey good doctor!"

The spotlight shone back on them as it started going the opposite way and they bowed.

Later that night, Luke and Ashton peeked around the red curtain at all the adults taking seats.

"Lotta people." Luke whispered. "Ashy, Lu feel sick."

Ashton grabbed Luke into a hug. "S' okay Lu." He brushed back a stray strand of Luke's blonde hair. "Be fine."

"O-okay." Luke gripped Ashton's hand tightly.

They took their places along with their classmates and the teacher started the play.

"Ashy." Luke whispered urgently, tugging on Ashton's sleeve. "Lukey feel sick again!"

The spotlight suddenly shone on them and Luke squeaked and froze.

Ashton looked from Luke to the crowd.

Quickly, he grabbed Luke's toy stethoscope and put it on himself.

He pressed the circular part of the toy to Luke's chest. "He's healthy!" He announced and the spotlight moved on.

Luke sighed in relief. "Thanks Ashon."

"Lu is wel-" Luke hugged Ashton tightly, laying his head on Ashton's shoulder.

The spotlight made its way back and highlighted them in bright white light.

"Oops." Ashton said.

"Hi." Luke giggled to the crowd.

The curtain closed after that and their parents rushed up to the stage to claim their children.

"Did you get stagefright Luke?" Liz asked as she helped him off the stage.

"Yas." Luke said softly. "Felt sick."

"Ashon helped!" Ashton shouted. "Ashon helped Lukey!"

"This won't be the last time you help him either." Ben mumbled and Luke's dad elbowed him.

"Thanks for helping Luke, Ashton." Mrs. Irwin said.

"Mama welky." Ashton giggled, petting her face as she lifted him off the stage.

"Here you boys go." Mr. Irwin handed each boy a rose. "Good job in the play!"

Luke took his and bashfully turned to Ashton.

"Oh shit!" Mrs. Irwin gasped, slapping Liz's arm.

"A-Ashy?" Luke asked, holding the rose out.

Liz screamed silently as she watched her boy get on one knee.

"Yas Lukey?" Ashton asked, turning around. He gasped.

"Ashy be Lukey's bestest friend?" Luke asked, looking hopefully up at Ashton.

Ashton paused for a moment. Then he smiled and pulled the flower off the stem of his rose. He placed the rose behind Luke's ear, leaning in to press a small kiss to Luke's cheek.

"Yas."

Luke beamed and stood up, hugging his new friend.

"Friends with benefits." Jack coughed.

"Lu come with Ashy to try out next play?" Ashton asked as they walked hand in hand out the doors.

"Yas." Luke closed his eyes and laid his head on Ashton's shoulder, smiling faintly.
