CHAPTER four

the cash register dinged, before the receipt came out of the machine with all of the things Jayda bought printed on them. "that'll be £46,50." the worker concluded, setting up the payer. Jayda quickly placed her brother's card on the machine, and put it back in when the payment was successful.

"thanks, good night." Jayda smiled, picking up the grocery bags as the worker smiled and exchanged the greeting after her. the sliding doors opened automatically, when she was presented by a cold gush of wind, and the dark starry night above her.

it was kind of a nice sight to see, only if she wasn't on the streets of London.

reality set her back, when the sound of gunshots fired resounded against her ears, but she was already used to it by now; the crack-heads yelling things in a whole new language, and the ringing of the police sirens across the block.

you'd think that things would calm down at night, yet, they were much worse—as the dark skies was pretty much the epitome of bad things happening.

Jayda was sent out by her brother to go get some groceries since they finished everything, and didn't realise it until 9 in the afternoon.

whilst humming a tune of a song she liked, she began hearing a pair of deep steps behind her, sounding to get closer and closer by the minute. Jayda felt like turning around, but her body just rushed forward, walking as fast as she possibly could without alerting whoever was behind her.

despite her frugal attempts at losing him while walking, she knew it was more reasonable to at least call her brother to meet up with her. the phone ringed for a couple of seconds, before he replied.

"what?" he asked, clearly annoyed by the disturbance.

"uhm, code stalker alert." Jayda muttered.

"where are you? share me your location, now." Jaxon could be heard shuffling through the phone, as he didn't end the call in case something actually happened.

Jayda did like she was told to, and shared her location, quickly putting her phone back in her pocket.

by now it was obvious the man was following her, after she already turned four times and went through an entire square across the sidewalks. she then started hearing his steps grow faster, and faster, until she could practically hear his breath.

so she ran, but he was much faster than her, as he quickly reached to her once again. Jayda closed her eyes as she ran, feeling them tingling while expecting him to strike her in any way, but nothing. she felt nothing.

the girl turned back around only to be met with a concrete wall, covering the entire street apart.

'that wasn't there before.' and it wasn't, it just appeared out of nowhere. she turned back around and looked at the wall with a puzzled expression, wondering when the fuck did it get there if she was just walking by it.

the Alana girl inched closer to the wall, reaching out with a curious hand to touch it, but it just went through—as if the concrete barrier wasn't actually there. she waved her hand through and around it, and it seemed like an illusion, like it was an image created by a projector. wherever she put her hand, the wall became translucent, while the other parts seemed extremely real.

backing away from the wall, she almost tripped by the sight, not knowing what to think and what to say to it.

"bruv, am i imagining this?" Jaxon stressed, watching her sister observe the wall just like he looked at her. it was no miracle that a concrete wall just appeared out of nowhere, in a street that he passed almost everyday and in just a mere second.

he walked up to Jayda, who was quickly breathing in and out, and turned her around so she could face him. her eyes were still fixated on the sight in front of her, but there was something off: her eyes were glowing yellow.

"ayo you good?" he worried, his expression showing clear signs of shock. he glanced at her before glancing back at the wall.

"yeah... i'm good." Jayda shook her head and regained composure, sighing and turning back to her brother. "it just appeared right before that fucker got me."

"i know, i saw." the older Alana nodded at her, believing her words. "come on, let's dip." he put a comforting hand on her upper back, and began walking them to their own home.

when they arrived to the door, Jaxon unlocked the door and made her enter, then closing the door behind him. Jayda quickly sat on the couch of the living room and curled up in a ball, while Jaxon sat on the couch opposite of her.

"did i do that?" Jayda breathed out, both of them wondering what happened just a couple of minutes ago.

"i have no idea." he shook his head, until it seemed like something came up on his mind which caused Jayda to furrow her eyebrows at him.

"maybe it was Jesus." Jaxon chuckled, as if he found out the solution to everything. "our prayers have been answered," he sat up, and pointed with his hands towards Jayda. "and he saved you."

Jayda deadpanned at him, and blinked her eyes a couple of times to make sure she was seeing and hearing correctly. "Jesus?" she repeated, but it sounded more like she was making fun of him.

"yes, Jesus!" he brought his arms in the air, breathing in the air while internally praising him.

"i'm not sure about that." Jayda sighed, and rested her head on the couch, feeling tired.

"Dad's bible study worked after all." he muttered, as a small smile appeared on his face.

with a smile, Jayda drifted off to sleep with the image of their father forcing them to read and study the bible with them, recalling their litres of tears poured out since he was always hard on them.

but things are meant to be appreciated in the moment, not after.
