The room was thick with tension, and Miyako's mind raced as the higher-ups glared down at her and Satoru. She had to think quickly, to find a way to protect her brother. The sight of Satoru, bound and helpless, filled her with a desperate resolve.
"Wait!" Miyako's voice cut through the oppressive silence. "Satoru has nothing to do with this. He found out about my actions and was about to report me. I had to wipe his memory with some help to protect him. Please, let him go and do whatever you want with me instead."
The higher-ups exchanged sceptical glances, their expressions hardening. "You expect us to believe that?"
Miyako's eyes were filled with sincerity and desperation. "It's the truth. Satoru had no part in my plans. He doesn't deserve to be punished for my actions."
One of the higher-ups, an elderly man with a stern face, stepped forward. "You claim you wiped his memory. How do we know this is true?"
Miyako took a deep breath, steadying herself. "You can check his memories yourself. You'll see that they have been altered. Just let him go, and I'll accept whatever punishment you deem necessary."
The room fell silent as the higher-ups considered her plea. The tension was palpable, each second stretching into an eternity. Finally, the elderly man nodded. "Very well. Satoru will be released, but he will be monitored at all times. As for you, Miyako, you will be detained and face the consequences of your actions."
Relief washed over Miyako, mingled with fear. She glanced at Satoru, whose confusion and hurt were evident. She longed to explain everything to him, to make him understand, but there was no time.
The sorcerers moved to take them away, and Miyako felt a hand on her shoulder, guiding her towards the door. She glanced back one last time, meeting Satoru's eyes. "I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
As they reached the corridor, the sorcerers leading her suddenly stopped in their tracks, their expressions bewildered. Before Miyako could react, the guards around her were knocked out in a flash, their bodies crumpling to the ground.
She turned to see Geto standing there, his presence commanding and fierce. He moved with incredible speed, breaking her restraints with a swift motion. "Suguru," she gasped, her mind racing.
Without giving her a chance to speak, Geto lifted her into his arms, his grip firm but gentle. "We don't have time for explanations," he said, his voice urgent. "We need to get out of here."
Miyako barely had time to process what was happening as Geto sprinted through the corridors, his movements fluid and precise. He navigated the maze-like passages with ease, avoiding detection and leading them to a hidden exit.
They emerged into the night, the cool air a stark contrast to the stifling atmosphere of the headquarters. Geto didn't stop, carrying her with unwavering determination. Miyako clung to him, her mind a whirlwind of emotions.
They reached his hidden house, a secluded place nestled deep within the forest. He looked around to ensure they weren't followed. "They probably won't find us here," he said, his voice a low murmur.
Miyako's cheeks flushed as she realised she was still in his arms. "You can put me down now," she said shyly.
Geto complied, setting her on her feet. There was a brief, soft moment between them, an unspoken connection that passed through their gazes. But it quickly dissipated as the reality of their situation settled in.
"Are you hurt?" he asked, concern lacing his voice.
Miyako shook her head, her thoughts still reeling. "I'm fine, but... Satoru..."
"Satoru will be fine," Geto assured her. "He's being monitored, but he's safe. We had to get you out of there before they could do anything worse."
She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "Why did you come for me? You could have been caught."
Geto's gaze softened, a rare vulnerability in his eyes. "I couldn't let you face this alone."
"How did you know?" she asked, her voice a mixture of curiosity and gratitude. "How did you know our secret was exposed?"
Geto's expression darkened. "I felt as if someone was watching us during our last meeting. I changed my words just enough that if anyone was eavesdropping, they would hear fake plans. It seems my suspicions were correct."
Miyako sighed, a mixture of relief and frustration washing over her. "I should have been more careful. But thank you, Suguru. You saved me."
Geto nodded, his eyes steady on hers. "You can stay here. There's an extra room and bathroom. As for clothes and supplies, I can have someone get them for you."
Miyako looked around, the weight of her situation settling in. She was a fugitive now, her future uncertain. But for the moment, she was safe, thanks to Geto. She turned to him, her expression earnest.
The next few days were a blur of adjustments and planning. Miyako settled into her new surroundings, grateful for the small comforts Geto had provided. Each day, she grew more accustomed to her new reality, even as the shadow of their predicament loomed large.
One evening, as she sat in her room, Miyako found herself reflecting on the events that had brought her here. The betrayal, the narrow escape, and the uncertain future ahead. She couldn't shake the feeling that they were on the brink of something monumental, a turning point that would shape their world.
There was a knock at her door, and she looked up to see Geto standing there. His presence was a steadying force, a reminder that she wasn't alone in this fight.
"How are you holding up?" he asked, his voice gentle.
Miyako managed a small smile. "As well as can be expected. It's a lot to process."
Geto nodded, his eyes filled with understanding. "We'll take it one step at a time. For now, rest and gather your strength. We'll need it for what's to come."
Miyako nodded, appreciating his words. As she lay down to sleep that night, her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. But beneath the chaos, there was a flicker of hope. They had made it this far, and together, they would face whatever came next.
---
The following morning, Miyako awoke with a renewed sense of purpose. She dressed quickly and made her way to the common area where Geto was already waiting. He handed her a cup of tea, and they sat in companionable silence for a moment.
"I've been thinking," Miyako began, breaking the silence. "About our next move. We need to gather more evidence, more allies. The higher-ups won't stop until we're either dead or completely discredited."
Geto nodded, his expression serious. "Agreed. We need to be strategic. There are others who share our views, but we need to be careful about whom we trust."
Miyako sipped her tea, her mind already racing with plans. "We need to find a way to communicate securely. And we need to stay one step ahead of them at all times."
Geto smiled, a hint of admiration in his eyes. "You're a natural strategist, Miyako. We'll make a formidable team."
Miyako felt a surge of determination. She had lost much, but she still had her resolve, her brother, and an unlikely ally in Geto. Together, they would navigate the treacherous path ahead and fight for the truth.
And with that resolve, they began to plan their next move, knowing that the battle was far from over, but also knowing that they were not alone in this fight.
