Once upon a time, God made an invitation to the animals, God sent the Crow to send the message to the animals. The Crow said "God is having a banquet tomorrow and invites all of you to come." But the Rat was mischievous and lied to his neighbour the Cat and informed him that the banquet was set for the day after tomorrow. Thus, on the day of the banquet the Rat arrived first after riding on the Ox's back and jumping off it with ease. Then the Rat followed the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Goat, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog and then the Boar. All the animals merrily feasted until dawn, all except the Cat who was sound asleep at home.
Each year God would hold another banquet and another. Each banquet celebrates one of the 12 animals, but just before the 13th banquet was held God's loyal friend, the Crow, Haku, noticed something. Each year the population of life on the Earth grew dramatically but when life was given to an animal, they would live for eternity and slowly the natural resource like plants and berries were limited to eat, and without them the animals would grow extremely hungry, their stomachs would groan with pain from the lack of food and their lives would become miserable. Over the 13 years of this Haku noticed more and more animals becoming hungry and miserable and decided to bring up the issue with God. "God, I have a query." Haku said to God.
"My dear friend, what is it that you wonder?" God asked.
"The animals, do they not seem miserable?" Haku asked.
God hummed. "They do seem unhappy, what do you expect is wrong?"
"I believe it is the lack of food, all the animals keep having children and populations keep increasing, I expect that the demand for food is increasing while the supply of it is not adequate enough to sustain them."
"I understand where you are coming from, there must be balance, but how?" God queered.
"Perhaps, the animals only have a certain amount of time on Earth then their spirits could spend an eternal rest of sorts in your realm." Haku thought out loud.
God thought for a moment. "That's a good idea, life could flourish and balance will be restored, but how would this be done? I can only create life, I can not destroy it."
"You could choose one of the animals at the banquet to become the representative of this eternal rest."
God smiled, "Yes and I have just the animal in mind."
The day of the 13th Banquet arrived and the animals arrived ready to feast. Haku sat on God's shoulder as always observing the feast. "My friends, it has come to my attention that life on Earth is not sustainable for the happiness of all, thus I have come to the conclusion to create a new concept."
The chatter of the animals filled the room. It was not often that God decided to create a new concept for life, so they were excited to hear what it was about. "I call it, 死, Death. It involves the abandonment of eternal life on Earth and after time passes you will all eventually succumb to an eternal rest and die. However, do not fret my friends for when one dies they will leave their physical body but their spirit will enjoy eternal life in my realm where hunger does not exist, nor the qualms of life. It is a place of peace and rest. For you, though my friends, your spirits will thrive as you return to life anew and so even when you die, we will continue our banquets. However, for this concept to work I will need a representative to bring death to the world and to help the spirits to pass on to my realm. This representative will be chosen today and will not be made my slave but as my equal. They will be the only being on Earth to possess eternal life and will only pass on when the last being on Earth dies."
The animals murmuring started up again, wondering who the lucky representative will be. "And the representative I have chosen is my loyal friend, Haku." God stated.
Haku looked at God perplexed while God simply placed the confused crow in the middle of the circle stating commandingly. "Haku the Crow, I choose you to be my equal and to return balance to the world that I have created. You are now and will forever be called Hakumei, Angel of Death."
And as quick as a flash, the crow that once stood was now of similar appearance to God, their feathers were replaced with flesh, their beak replaced with a mouth full of pointed teeth. The only thing differing from God was the two ebony black wings that bore on their back and their bird-like legs which remained. There was now a halo above their head, but instead of the round, golden one of God's it was pointed and black which matched their now black and purple eyes.
The animals of the zodiac bowed down to Hakumei as Hakumei stood tall next to God.
