"Perhaps I should stop, give up my place in these ridiculous games."Apollo heard a familiar voice behind the large pillar exclaim. "Lady Sovereign will understand; she will not take offense."

"Leneus,I love you so very much,I do."Another voice replied, filled with a desperation that tugged at the heart. "But you must think of our nation first, you are the king. What will happen if some filth manages to take our sovereign's hand? Our kingdom will be doomed."

"But what about us?."Leneus asked, his voice tinged with despair,a tremor betraying his resolve.

"In another life, perhaps we could be together,"The female voice sighed, deep sorrow evident in every word.

Apollo was taken aback as he observed Leneus place his hand on her cheek, kissing her deeply, gazing into her eyes as if she were the love of his life.He had thought the mortal king desired Kassia for what was once his.Now it was clear something else was at play—Leneus was here for political reasons, not out of desire or even for Kassia.

Deciding to interrupt,Apollo stepped into view. "Hera would rage to see this, the one she rooted for being in the arm of another."

Both were startled by his sudden presence. The girl looked as though she was about to cry. "My lord, you misunderstand.Nothing—"

"It is fine,Lyria,"Leneus told her calmly, ever composed despite the turmoil. "Run along, return to the company."

"Yes,your majesty,"The girl bowed deeply before hastening away.Leneus sighed, looking at Apollo before bowing once more. "Lord Phoebus, shall we have a seat?."

"I see no reason why not,"Apollo replied, his voice steady as they both took a seat.Leneus poured wine into his chalice with precise, deliberate movements.

They sat in silence, the air heavy with unspoken words.Apollo took the opportunity to peer into Leneus's mind, walking through his childhood, witnessing the anguish of his mother's death,Themis taking him in,shaping him and placing the burdens of leadership on his shoulders, and finally, the day Leneus fell for the girl he saw earlier.Apollo gave him a cruel smirk. "Falling for Kassia's high priestess—what great treachery. You and your sovereign are not so different after all."

"I do hope you keep your forked tongue behind your teeth,"Leneus said sharply, without fear, his eyes hardening before he calmed himself and took a deep gulp of wine. "I should not drink this; wine corrupts the mind."

"Rich, coming from an Ioran.Your lady sovereign drinks more than five chalices a day,"Apollo retorted,a hint of mockery in his tone.

"Well,I cannot fault her for that,"Leneus replied with a small, resigned smile.

Apollo leaned in,irritation creeping into his voice. He did this because of the boy,if the boy did not sound as if he hold this man in high regard,Apollo would have just smite him before digging out the truth from him with his own power. "Explain."
