About a week later Izuku was feeling much better. After Eraser and Mic forced him to explain everything about his secret vigilante work to his mother, she agreed to let Izuku attend UA, simply so he wouldn't be arrested.
However, she agreed with his concerns about Bakugo. Izuku assured her it would be fine, and then contradicted himself by sobbing into her arms about the very same topic after Aizawa and Mic had left. She knew how much he struggled. She knew the entire reason he went out to save people was because when he felt like he had so little control over saving himself he could save others to make up for it. Somehow that act made up for all of the physical and mental hurt he felt everyday. It was the only thing that made him feel better.
She knew her son was going to be suffering this way, and she didn't even know about the time Bakugo had told her son to take a swan dive off the roof, nor how close he'd come to actually doing something of the sorts.
But this was better than being arrested. She knew her son could never survive prison, even if only for a short time, so this was their best option. She was grateful he was given the opportunity and was safe in the hands of such caring heroes.
However, Izuku didn't feel safe at all. When he arrived at UA with his stuff for his dorm, he felt quite bad actually. He was terrified. So terrified he was trembling as he pulled a box of things and a suitcase into his room. He didn't have much, just some clothes and bedding.
He knew all eyes were on him as he walked through the common room with Aizawa, and though he didn't see Bakugo there, he knew rumor of his arrival would find him eventually.
Aizawa was helping him carry Izuku's things to his dorm when the boy sat down on his bare mattress and focused diligently on taking deep breaths. He was so stressed he wasn't breathing right, he felt everything growing out of his control and his body was reacting like he needed to fight to get it back.
"You okay?" Aizawa asked as he set the box down.
"Just-" Izuku took another deep breath and then buried his head in his hands. Aizawa quickly sat down next to him and put a hand on his back. Izuku tensed, but relaxed into the comforting touch after a moment.
"I don't deserve this." He said, his voice unsteady and his hands migrating to claw at his hair. His breathing was harsh.
"Hey, just take some breaths-"
"I'm trying."
"Midoriya -"
"I can't breathe." He huffed, desperately trying to get air, "I'm freaking out- I can't do this- I want to go home." He begged, tears beginning to trail down his cheeks as he got up and paced.
"Midoriya, we're going to take good care of you." Aizawa said, still sitting calmly, but he wasn't getting through to the boy.
The hero stood up, caught the boy, and pulled him into a hug, "breathe through it, kid." Aizawa said as Midoriya hid in the teacher's shoulder and sobbed through uneven breaths. His chest hurt and was tight. He felt like he was dying.
"I can't do this." He cried, his voice muffled by Aizawa's scarf, "I'm so scared- I feel- I feel s-so s-scared it hurts." He stuttered, tripping over his words, but continuing like joggers over an uneven sidewalk square.
"Was he that bad?" Aizawa asked hesitantly, referring to Bakugo.
Izuku pulled away and took a breath, pushing the heels of his hands into his forehead and closing his eyes, taking a deep, controlled inhale. He held it for a minute before breathing out.
