(Hey, I just split this chapter into two because when I was editing and writing more to it, I thought it got very long for just one chapter. Might rename this chapter later.)
Ethan embrace his father, who squeezes him too tightly. But his own embrace is also tight in relief so he doesn't care. Looking past him, he sees his youngest brother. Ethan starts laughing, starting to think he might be dreaming. "Buzz."
"Hey, bro." Jake chuckles in disbelief and hug his older brother.
After pulling back, Ethan looks around at the other people with them as they pull down their masks. He mumbles all their nicknames and hug them while chuckling in disbelief and relief at confirming that they, his family, is alive.
When the last one pulls down the cloth covering his face, Ethan looks at Blue and finally feels the tears are hard to hold back. He grabs and pull him in for a tight embrace, a rogue tear running down his face. He's not just relieved, but proud Blue's alive. Not that he didn't have faith, it's just good to see him. The others too, of course. But seeing his father and Blue hit the hardest.
And after actually getting a son, and feeling proud of Parker's growth from your parenting, he now recognises the feeling he had whenever he saw Blue grow as not just a soldier, but a person. He's watched up close, influenced and were apart of Blue growing up from being a rebellious boy, who was forced to join the military just so his parents didn't have to deal with him, into becoming a young man, a good man.
After pulling back, he holds Blue's head and looks at him with admiration. A tear falls down his cheek, too. Usually, they'd make fun of the two guys basically crying and they'd have a laugh. But the moment is too deep and meaningful that they all just savour the moment and sight of Ethan alive.
Glancing around at the team, he then frowns and starts asking all kinds of questions.
Before they can answer anything, a distant trains horn sounds.
Ethan's eyes widen in panic. "No, no, no." He takes off running.
Confused, they glance at each other and then run after Ethan. On the way, they see him grab and steal a bowl of apples, tilting it into his bag as he runs, then just drop the empty bowl. He's running fast and no one at the market reacts in time before he's past the and on his way out of the city.
"Ethan!"
"I can't miss that train!" He just yells back.
Ethan wish he could stay and explain, but you three are his first priority and right now he's about to miss the train. If he doesn't make it, you would probably jump off with the kids to not split up. But getting on the way and with that train is vital for your journey and maybe even your survival, because of the lack of access to food here.
Getting closer, they can see the train. It's not driving fast yet, but it is slowly speeding up. As it starts to pass, one of the carts in the middle is open and they see a girl peak her head out and yell.
"Daddy!" Mia exclaims worriedly. The team share a few glances in confusion as they run.
Seeing they won't make it to the cart in time, you turn to the man that works on the train, forcing him to tell you how you can get him onboard. The man tells you about some escape ladders they have rolled up and you take one. You pull it over your shoulder and climb out on top. Then you run on top the train to the carts further down.
Ethan watch you as he runs as fast as he can to not miss the last cart. You've ran past him and get to the last cart. It's a different type of cart, filled with black sand. You stumble slightly as you land on it, but get to the side, attach the ladder and pull it over the edge. It rolls out and down to Ethan.
"Go!" He shouts for the ones running behind who reaches it first.
They grab it and use it to climb up. One by one grab and starts climbing hurriedly up for everyone to get on in time. As they climb up, you grab your pocket knife just in case, waiting for Ethan. You watch them cautiously, everyone is wearing a mask covering some part of their face so you don't recognise them. They look at you, but you have a red bandana and a headband covering most your face.
Ethan gets on the train last. Climbing up, he looks over at the guys panting from the run. They're all splayed out on the black sand. When he turns, you smack his arm angrily. He winches in surprise and looks at you.
"I told you!" You sign avidly with your hands to him in frustration.
"I know, I know. I'm sorry." He signs back.
"What would you do if you didn't make it, huh!?"
"I'm sorry. But I did, thanks to you. It's okay now." He signs while moving closer, trying to calm you.
You smack his hands away when he reaches for you and sign aggressively, clearly agitated.
"It's not okay! They gave away our spot, we need to stay outside the train. And the storm is going to be bad tonight." You sign to him.
He signs an affirmation and you start walking back. Ethan turns to the guys and gets closer, shouting to them over the loud train noise.
"Just stay here! We don't get to stay inside. We'll be back." Ethan tells them and head up the train after you.
The train is now at full speed and it's almost impossible to hear but he gestures for them to stay put. Then he walks after you.
