Pope

He didn't believe his sister was dead. His parents did. And were a wreck for days before school started up again. It was a week until the dreaded day.
Everyone on the island was still talking about the great escape. Pope and Kiera did they're best to ignore the speculations. The rumors.

The rumors were killing him on the inside. Pope shook his head. He sat in his shared room and looked over to his sister's side. Her unmade bed sat untouched. Everything was as it was the last time they were home together. The day of his scholarship interview.

Now he was even more depressed just thinking about it.

He couldn't stand being here. He felt so suffocated by everything. He pulled out his phone and called Kie. That situation plagued his mind too. Was it him? Was it her? He just wanted things to go back to normal.

As he stood up, he left the room and ignored his father sitting on the couch with a beer in his hands. His mother in the kitchen, making Rowan's favourite meal. They didn't even acknowledge him as he left the house.

——

"They didn't make it."  Shoupe said, as he walked over to the anxious pouges. They stood in shock as the news washed over them. They didn't make it. They didn't make it. She didn't make it.
All he heard next was crying. Shouts of anger and sirens dimming down. All except for one.

Pope woke with a start. Sitting up in a sweat, he turned to the side and shut off his alarm clock blaring in his ear. He dragged a hand down his face to wipe away the memory of that dreadful night. He knew in his gut they weren't dead. He'd like to blame it on the twin telepathy. For once, it was being useful. She wasn't gone. He would know. He would feel it.
But everyone else seemed to think they were. With a sigh, he looked over to his sister's side of the room. Still as time. He shook his head as he got up and got ready for school.

The first day was here already and he's never not been excited for school. He wished Rowan was here so they could go in and brace it together.

Once he was done, he grabbed his bag and turned to see his father, sitting on the chair again.  Pope fears he hasn't moved, but he noticed he was wearing new clothes so he assumed his mother forced him up. But as he turned to say goodbye, his mouth opened, but closed again and left without saying anything. He felt bad but knew there was nothing he could do or say to make them feel better. They were one less child. Nothing could bring her back. If she was really dead in the first place.

As he got into Kie's car, the others looked as he felt. Defeated and lost. The ride was quite as Kie drove. When they reached the school, Pope hesitated a bit before getting out of the car. Kie and JJ follow suit as they walk across the lot. Enduring the whispers about what happened. They stop once they reach a memorial rock painted for Rowan and John B.
