Pope wasn't sure what to expect when he got the letter. He really didn't want to have to take his dad's truck all the way cross town just to see if this lady was legit. A lot has happened already and he didn't know how to process it all. He felt anxiety creep through as he and the others stoped at the rusted gates. This place was huge. Bigger than the houses on Figure Eight. Why would anyone on the inside want anything to do with him?
His eyes scanned his surroundings with caution. He took out the letter to double check the address. "Twenty-seven King Street." He read, as he focused on the barbed wire along the fence."Talk about home security." JJ said, "are those spikes to keep people out?"
"No." Kie answered. Pope's stomach dropped at the thought.
"The slave quarters are over there." Pope says, "these spikes were to keep people in." In silence, the three got past the gates and walked slowly over to the brown door with a lion carved door knocker. Pope sent a look to Kie and JJ before he grabbed the handle and knocked three times. "You think that was too much?" He questioned, as he stepped back a little.
"It echoed the entire house. That's for sure. So they definitely heard it." JJ said
"Maybe nobody's home." Kie suggested.
"You hope." Pope muttered, as he raised his hand to knock again. But as he did, a scruffy looking guy stood in front of them. He looked between the three teens standing in front of him.
"You must be Pope." He said, pointing towards him, which didn't ease Pope's fear about this any less.
"Um...are you Mr. Limbrey?"
"Ms.Limbrey was expecting you yesterday."
"Oh. I'm..I'm sorry. My car broke down on the way up here." Pope explained.
"Carburetor blew up in the middle of Nowwheresville." JJ added, "sorry about that."
"Yeah, she was uh, real upset when you didn't show up." The guy said, looking back to Pope.
"We tried to call, but there's no number on the invitation." Kie said, "we got here as fast as we could."
"She also expected you to come alone." Pope held in an eye roll. There was no way that was going to happen.
"I mean, these are my friends. They helped find the Royal Merchant too. I—"
"The instructions were explicit. Your friends can stay outside." The Guy tells him. Pope turned to look back at Kie and JJ.
"We're kind of a package deal, man." JJ chimed in, but Pope looked at him and told him it was okay, even though he was dying on the inside. Something felt off about this. He turned one more time towards Kie and JJ and told them
To keep the car running before they headed inside the house. Pope walked slowly as the guard told him to wait in the living room. He held the letter in his hands as he looked around. The old paintings of Jesus would've made Rowan roll her eyes if she were here with him. Right now, he was really wishing she was.
