Chapter 12

Max's POV:

As soon as the car stops I feel Miles shaking me waking me up. I see Sarah already out of the car avoiding Jennifer's stare. I get up and we all follow Jennifer inside. Once we are all inside I see Will sitting at the table looking disappointed. I look at the clock and see it say 7:00 meaning Henry is at school. Miles, Sarah and I go into the living sitting on the couch waiting for JJ and Will.

"Okay here's what's gonna happen you're gonna tell me what you all were thinking." JJ says seriously

"I just wanted to go hang out with Sarah and Miles." I say shrugging

"Max look at your mom when she's talking." Will says sternly crossing his arms

"Look Sarah and I should head home our parents are gonna wonder where we went." Miles says standing up

'Oh no you're not going anywhere you guys are gonna sit and tell us what happened. My first question is why do you guys smell like cigarettes and alcohol?" JJ says raising her voice

"So what we drank and smoke we do it all the time to relax when we can't sleep." I say getting defensive

"Max calm down don't make this worse." Miles whispers to me rubbing my back

"Look Mrs Jareau Max called us and we went to the park where we usually go when Max can't sleep." Sarah says honestly

"I can understand that. What I don't understand is why you all snuck out of your houses, didn't tell anyone where you were going, got drunk, and smoked." JJ says

"How long have you all been doing that stuff? You're ten. Who told you could?" Will asks seriously

"We've been drinking and smoking for two years. One of the older kids at the orphanage introduced us. As for sneaking out I've been doing it since I was six to get away when things were too much." I say looking at the floor

"Look don't punish Max she didn't wanna come but I forced her. I just wanted to hang out with her." Sarah says lying for me

"Really so you told Max not to leave a note?" JJ asks suspiciously

"No that was me look don't punish her. Sarah and I are to blame." Miles says standing up lying

"Here's what's gonna happen you all are gonna go upstairs. I'm gonna call your parents. Once they come I want you guys to take a break from hanging out." JJ says

Before I can argue with JJ Miles and Sarah drag me upstairs. Once we're in my room I see them walk around staring at my room. They sit on the bed. Why would they lie for me? Now I can't see them for a while. I'm pissed.

"Why did you guys cover for me?" I ask angrily

"Look I don't care if she thinks we are bad influences." Sarah says flipping through my drawings

"Yeah she already doesn't like us. So it doesn't matter. Plus it got you out of trouble and having her question you." Miles says shrugging

"How are we gonna hang out now?" I ask flopping on my bed

"You still have your burner phone?" Sarah questions

"Yeah why?" I ask

"Sarah and I will call you. We will find a new hanging place. We will sneak out see one another every night once we are sure our parents are sleeping. Plus we will still see each other at school." Miles answers

"I just hate that we have to hide around to hang out now." I say sadly

"I know but it's only temporary." Sarah says hugging me

"How about we watch a movie quietly waiting for your parents?" I ask

Once I find "Spy Kids" our comfort movie I put it in. I sigh as I cuddle with Sarah and Miles. Never in a million years would I think we'd be banned from each other. They saved me in more ways than one. All I know is I won't stop seeing them. They are my best friends. I can't help but feel like this isn't the first time I'll be in trouble with them. All I know is no one will stop us from hanging out.
