After three sweeps of both the interior and exterior, the group was convinced that the church was safe and that Gabriel had been telling the truth about being alone. The church wasn't much but it was more space than they could ask for.
However, they were still not convinced that they could trust Gabriel. Stella didn't fall for the scared and innocent priest act. She wasn't going to take any chances. That's why she decided to stay back when most of the adults decided to go out to scavenge. Levi, who had sworn to never leave Stella's side again, didn't hesitate when he chose to stay with her.
Inside the Church, it was still and empty. Rick, Michonne, Sasha, and Bob, had headed to the food bank and decided to bring Gabriel with them while Daryl and Carol went out looking for cars and gas. Tara Glenn and Maggie had gone into town to scavenge out the stores, looking for weapons and anything useful leaving the rest of the group at the church to keep a lookout for any of Gabriel's possible allies, hiding in the forest around them.
Very few of them stayed back. Rosita Abraham and Eugene were outside, working on trying to get the school bus started. Carl sat next to Levi, chattering and fiddling with his gun. Stella had let Tyrese take a break and rest while she put Judith to bed.
Stella slowly swayed Judith in her arms as she hummed the song that Lori had sung for both her and Carl. You are my sunshine.
The warmth of Judith's body in her arms was enough to heal every wound on the older sister's body. She watched as her eyes slowly dropped over her sight while she rocked her gently back and forth.
Levi, who sat on the church benches, lifted his attention from Carls's gun, staring at the door where the humming flowed from. He couldn't help but feel a smile bloom on his face. It was quiet enough in the crunch for him to hear the soft sound of Stella's humming from where he was sitting. Slow and soft notes of the lullaby You Are My Sunshine, filled the church, sending a flickering warmth to the boy's stomach. He could stay there forever and listen to her.
He slid away from the benches, whispering something quickly to Carl before he moved over to the wooden floors to the half-opened door by the alter to see Stella moving rhythmically, with her attention plastered on the baby in her arms.
Levi gently shut the door behind him before slowly walking over to the girl, admiring her from behind. He placed two soft hands on her hips, to not scare her. Stella smiled, feeling Levi's body gently press against her and the warmth of his hands brushing over her curves.
"Hi," she whispered, glancing at him over her shoulder.
"Hey," he said back, his breath tickling her ear. One of his hands left Stella's side, moving to brush over Judith's head, smiling at the sight of her cooing in her sleep. The two moved gently back and forth, while both looking at Judith. Levi couldn't help but notice the small flicker within him. A flicker of hope and longing. A longing desire to one day have this be the ordinary for the pair. A life where the two could live in safety with a child of their own.
