𝓗𝓪𝓽𝓪𝓴𝓮 𝓚𝓪𝓴𝓪𝓼𝓱𝓲'𝓼 walls hardly ever crack, but at the tickling of Haruno Sakura's sobbing laughs in his ears, he's grateful to wear a mask.
"Kakashi-sensei!"
His callous fingers dig deep into the girl's shoulders as he sets her down gently, eyes searching for injuries. She's paper-thin, wearing a revealing purple blouse he has never seen before, and the dark circles engraved under her pretty eyes have never been more apparent. But there's also a glint in her gaze, a resolution plastered on her delicate features, and from one look at the girl, Kakashi can tell she's fallen head over heels for the brooding Uchiha again.
"You needed protection, after all," a masked man said, eyeing them from a few branches up.
Sakura's eyebrows scrunch in a disappointed scowl until Kakashi pats the top of her pink head.
"Not protection, just a loyal teammate."
"Loyal, Hatake? Really? Loyal?"
Upon hearing Sakura's opponent's mocking tone, Kakashi quizzically looks at the pink-haired girl.
"He's weirdly obsessing over you. Whoever that is definitely has a vendetta."
"Ah, well, that happens. I pissed off a few people over the years."
Kakashi uses a detached tone, but the other's chakra feels suspiciously familiar.
"You have no idea," the man replies, dropping to their level. "And as much as I would love to kill her in front of you, then kill you, I was only here as a distraction. I'm sure Itachi's done toying with his little brother by now."
He disappears with a wave in a swirl of black, red, and orange, and as soon as his spiky raven hair is out of sight, Kakashi returns to inspecting the girl beside him.
As his fingers graze the scrapes on her cheek, his heart in his throat, Kakashi realizes his deep feelings for the Kunoichi. And in another universe, if they had been closer in age and life and love hadn't wounded them, he might have courted her. As it is, Haruno Sakura holds a special place in his heart. What they share isn't as fickle as a romantic relationship. It's a Platonic Love, a deep connection, an understanding of each other, an indestructible bond.
