Back In The Saddle
THE TWO sat on the bench overlooking the small pond that ran under the greenhouse of the botanical garden. Connie sat her sandwich on the wax paper, looking at the ducks in the pond. The humidity of the water and the Oklahoma sun made her sweat out of her jacket.
"You cut your hair," Aiden spoke up, and she nodded. "Long hair, its springtime." Connie explained.
"It looks good." He compliments, biting into his sandwich. Connie looked over the young boy who tossed bread into the water to the ducks. "Who is your shadow?" She asks him.
"My intern, I took him on from OU." He explains, he shrugs. "He's a good guy you will like him." He reassured.
"You have an intern now?" She asked, her brows furrowed. "Yes, he wants to be just like us." He says, she shook her head.
"He should be better." She says. Connie inhaled deeply. "Why did you bring me out here?" She asks him, he brushes his pants off.
"I'm guessing you already have seen the cell building up," Aiden asked her, she nodded her head. "The record outbreak of Tornados that are supposed to happen." He added.
"Nothing new happens every year." She shrugged him off. He rolled his eyes. "Come on now, Connie don't be like that." He states.
"Be like what?" She exclaimed. "It's tornado season, okay we aren't strangers to this." She brushed him off.
"There's this guy Javi, he offered me and you a position on his crew to help with go after these storms." He tells her, and she shakes her head.
"He is saying that these tornados that we have been seeing the last few weeks, they ain't nothing like we have ever seen." Aiden emptied, she scoffed. "And you believe him?" She asked.
"Yes, and you should too." He stated he reached into his bag next to him pulled out an iPad, and scrolled through his files clicking on a news report. He handed it to her, and Connie watched as a camera panned over a damaged town.
"That was Sulpher, half the downtown was destroyed and about fifteen people were killed, injuries, 190." He reported to her, she furrowed her brows. The destroyed buildings and the damage were shown, and her heart raced to see the phone footage of the tornado ripping apart the football stadium.
"We have to help, and I can't do this on my own, okay I need you." He states she pushed his pad back to him. "I can't....not I...no." She stuttered, shaking her head.
"Con, I know what happened was terrifying, and it wasn't your fault." He reassured her, and she shook her head. "I can't go through this again...you have an intern, you are putting him at risk." She reminds him.
"He has already seen four tornados, a lot more than fr-" " Please don't say their names." She whispered to him, and he nodded. "Okay....Connie, I wouldn't be here asking if this wasn't serious." He states.
