SHE LOVED HER JOB, it was the best thing in her life. She also hated her job, seeing what her passion in life did to other people, taking away their lives and possessions. The town of Crystal Springs sadly was just another town in the path of the tornado.
Connie walked past the destroyed neighborhood, a bitter taste in her mouth. Watching the people try and collect what remained of their lives, she pulled her button down closer to herself, shivering.
"Hey!" Ryan shouted, bent down in front of the metal barn door.
"There's someone pinned under here!" He grit. Connie darted to him hopping over Debri. She got next to his side, nodding. "On three." She tells him.
"One, two," Connie grunted, raising the door with the strength she could muster. Ryan groaned as he lifted it high enough, an emt came over and pulled the man out from under the debris. Once free they let it drop.
"Are you good?" Connie asked him, and he nodded. He sniffled wiping his brown eyes, looking around at the destroyed home. She could see it on his face, he wasn't okay.
"Hey," Connie spoke to him gently. The young man looked at her, his curly black hair in a messy bun. "I'm not gonna lie to you, this is going to keep happening." She tells him.
"Only if you stay, and if you leave now, you can skip out on seeing this." She reassured him, he shook his head. "I'm not going anywhere." He says.
"You're just a kid, you shouldn't have to see this." She crossed her arms, he raised a brow. "I'm 22," He mumbled.
"That's still young." She says, he shook his head. "And I have seen a lot worse than this, so I'm not going anywhere," Ryan confirmed.
"Okay." She says defeated, sighing heavily getting a sense of Deja Vu. "EMTs are passing out water, you should go help," Connie tells him.
She crossed her arms watching him walk away. She remembered being like that, young and thinking she already had all the answers and could take on the world. When she was still a kid, she gulped looking at her wet shoes.
"Stubborn that one." Aiden's voice spoke up, and she nodded. "Yeah, I know." She mumbled.
"Remind me of you." Aiden teased her, softly chuckling. "Yeah, that scares me." She says, shaking her head.
"Look can I talk to you about something?" He asks her, she turns looking at him and nodding.
"Back there on the road, we have to be more careful. " Aiden cautioned, she nodded. "I know...and I'm sorry I pushed you too hard." She says, playing with her fingers.
"If we hadn't gotten stuck we probably wouldn't be here right now." Connie reminded him, and he shrugged.
"I don't know we could have outrun." He suggested. "Could have doesn't mean the same as would have." She states. His shoulders slumped.
