**Chapter 5: Unspoken Currents**

---

The river flowed, its surface rippling under the morning sun. Giyu Tomioka knelt by the water, letting his hair cascade down. Sanemi Shinazugawa watched him, his gaze lingering—studying, assessing. But as soon as Sanemi realized he was staring, annoyance flashed across his features. He turned away, muttering something under his breath.

They rested on the ground near the river after they had dried off and got changed, the silence heavy. Giyu tried to make conversation, but Sanemi's coldness was a wall—an unyielding barrier. Still, Giyu couldn't shake the feeling—the desire to break through, to understand the man who despised him.

"Your sword," Giyu said, gesturing at Sanemi's blade. "It's well-crafted."

Sanemi's eyes widened, caught off guard. "Yeah, well," he mumbled. "I've had it a long time." there's was a small pause until shinazugawa replied back again saying "Your sword," he said stopping for a quick second before continuing what he was going to say "It's pretty."

Giyu chuckled. "A compliment, Shinazugawa? You surprise me."

Sanemi's face flushed, embarrassment warring with anger. "Shut up," he snapped. "I didn't mean—"

But Giyu's laughter echoed, genuine and warm. "It's fine," he said. "I appreciate it."

They resumed —an hour later, Sanemi sharpening his sword, Giyu writing another letter to Master Ubuyashiki. The ink flowed, capturing their trials—the demon, the injury, and the unspoken currents between them.

As Giyu wrote, his thoughts strayed. Sanemi—the way he fought, the way he blushed. Giyu had wanted friendship, camaraderie. But now, his heart danced along a precipice—a dangerous edge. He pushed the thoughts away, focusing on duty.

They ate the old lady's food—the flavors simple, comforting. Giyu has smiled for how tasty the food was for their journey.

As they walked, Giyu glanced at Sanemi. "We'll find that demon," he said. "And this time, and hit back stronger"

And so, they continued—the unlikely duo, bound by more than duty. The wind whispered secrets, and Giyu wondered if they were ready for what lay ahead—the demons, the mysteries, and the fragile threads that tied them together.
