𝐉𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐏𝐄𝐑'𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐃 of Bellatrix ever since that evening in the broom cupboard. She'd find herself zoning out during classes or while working on homework as she wondered when she'd get to talk to her again. The older witch had started nodding at her when they passed each other in the corridors, which Juniper thought was a good sign.
Andromeda was growing suspicious. She'd questioned Juniper about the opal necklace she'd been wearing every day since her birthday, but the Hufflepuff girl had denied when she asked if Bellatrix had given it to her – she knew better to confront her older sister, but since her best friend wasn't giving her any straight answers, she just might have to do so.
"Honestly, Andy, it's nothing," Juniper said as they left their final class Friday afternoon. She was holding onto the opal pendant, rubbing her thumb across the smooth stone.
"You and Bella are hiding something, I just know it," Andromeda insisted. "Juniper." She grabbed the smaller girl's arm and forced her to look at her. "I don't want you to get hurt," she whispered. "I . . . I seriously feel like Bella's messing with your feelings. She isn't consistent. She might be nice for a moment, but she'll just go back to giving you the cold shoulder."
She glanced around the corridor full of students chatting excitedly about the weekend. She pulled Juniper into an empty classroom so they could talk without anyone overhearing.
"Juni, listen. I love my sister, but she's not a nice person. The holidays are coming soon, meaning our parents are going to give her a talking-to about her expectations once she graduates . . . You and I both know what that means."
Juniper lowered her gaze, different conflicting emotions flickering across her face. "I know," she admitted in a whisper.
Bellatrix was expected to marry a suitable pureblood husband; one from the sacred twenty-eight. Juniper knew that all contact would be cut off between them once she left Hogwarts. She'd stay behind to finish her last two years while Bellatrix went off and did whatever it was she was planning to do when she was done with school.
But Juniper just wanted to pretend. She really felt like they were making progress. Somehow, someway, she hoped that wherever Bellatrix ended up in the future that their lives would cross paths again.
"I know I keep telling you this, but just be careful, okay?" Andromeda requested. "Don't let your guard down around her. Once she knows your weakness, she's sure to use it against you."
"You don't really believe that, do you?" Juniper asked quietly, leaning back against one of the tables.
Andromeda smiled sadly. "I hate to admit it, but . . . when it comes to doing what's right or what's been drilled into her head by our parents . . . she's going to choose the darkness. There's nothing anyone can do to change her mind. Not me, not Narcissa . . . not even you."
