the breakout

𝐍𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐀 𝐋𝐄𝐓 𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐀 𝐒𝐈𝐆𝐇 𝐀𝐒 Juniper and Lucius glared at each other from across the dinner table Christmas night. "Oh, honestly you two, is this really necessary?" she asked, taking a sip from her glass of wine. "You're acting like school children. No offense . . . children," she added with a glance towards Draco and Dorothea.

Juniper broke her stare-off with Lucius, but her jaw clenched when the man smirked, thinking he had won. "Cissa's right," she grumbled as she cut into her ham. "It's the holidays. There's no reason why we ought not be civil with each other."

"I have a good reason," Lucius muttered.

"And that would be?" Juniper asked, pursing her lips.

Lucius sipped his wine and smirked. "I don't like you and your dirty blood."

Juniper leaned forward, her elbows resting on the table. She narrowed her eyes at him. "And I don't like you and your snobby attitude."

Dorothea took an awkward drink of her butterbeer. She exchanged a quick glance with her cousin, who raised his brows in a silent comment on the tension at the table.

"This is ridiculous," Narcissa said. "Don't you think it's time you two dropped this rivalry? It's been twenty-five years. The world is changing, Lucius."

"Just because the world is changing doesn't mean I am obliged to do so as well," Lucius stated. He ate a forkful of mashed potatoes, peas, and carrots.

"But Auntie Bella did," Dorothea said before she could stop herself. The silence that followed made her stop separating her peas from her carrots. She glanced up, her face turning slightly pink. "Didn't she?"

Juniper inhaled through her nose. She let the breath out slowly through her mouth, her gaze lowering to her lap. "I don't think she'd be in Azkaban if she did," she mumbled. She placed her napkin on the table and excused herself, leaving the dining room without a glance towards the others.

"Dorothea, what have I told you about mentioning Bellatrix in front of Juniper?" Andromeda scolded.

"I-It was just a question, Mum," Dorothea defended herself. "All I was wondering was, if— if Auntie Bella changed enough to accept Juni and her blood status, why can't Uncle Lucy do the same?"

"For Salazar's sake child, stop calling me Uncle Lucy!" Lucius snapped.

"Lucius!" Narcissa hissed, kicking her husband underneath the table.

"Question or not, you still shouldn't have brought it up," Andromeda said. "She's really sensitive about it."

"Juniper is tough, Dromeda," Ted spoke up. "Thea meant no harm."
